Team 5 Outstanding Performers from the Texas Sophomore Showcase

The Texas Sophomore Showcase brought together some of the state's premier young talent, but it was these five players who really stood out to me. Operating with an elite mix of high basketball IQ, sheer grit, and unmatched competitive energy, they consistently dictated the game every single time they came onto the court. From the post players to the guards, this group put on a spectacular performance and made it clear they are the future of Texas hoops.    Niylah can truly do it all on the court and serves as a great reminder of the phrase, "the best ability is availability." From the point guard position, she literally did everything her team needed in the showcase—whether she was crashing the glass, immediately pushing the pace in transition to get her teammates open looks, or diving on the floor to chase down 50/50 balls. She also displays an advanced basketball IQ by consistently making the right reads out of the pick-and-roll, a difficult skill to master that illustrates her elite combination of rebounding, vision, and steadiness as a highly effective playmaker. I mean… she is the absolute real deal, and I know—believe and hope—that many opportunities come her way to play at the next level.       Christa is a fierce, downhill driver who thrives on initiating and absorbing contact on her way to the rim. She can get to the rack with authority, and she doesn't mind letting you know it—not in a disrespectful way, but she displays a level of confidence that I love to see from players. She got downhill several times, using a "hostage" football carry to shield defenders and frequently forcing her way to the free-throw line. Her competitive nature completely shines through her lockdown defense and her unselfish ability to generate scoring opportunities for her teammates. I really like her game; job well done.       Elisabeth has tremendous upside, and she is going to be an absolute problem next year and beyond. She is a force around the rim, and well... I'm starting her reputation right now: she is a beast in the post. She has an explosive spin move that leaves defenders off balance, and she is equally dangerous catching and finishing out of the high post area. Defensively, her elite timing lets her control the paint and completely alter entire games as an impactful shot-stopper. I mean, she was a STRONG POST PRESENCE out there on the floor—a physical problem down low for anyone trying to match her energy.  [player_tooltip player_id='1216227' first='Elisabeth' last='Gomis'] is going to be a problem, mark my words!  We will be hearing her name at the next level.       Kobi is a versatile, inside-out threat—a true stretch 4—who can absolutely shoot the rock and still handle contact down low like a traditional post player. She spaces the floor beautifully with a consistent, reliable three-point shot that keeps defenses honest on the perimeter. By pairing that pure outside shooting with her ability to crash the glass and rebound, she provides elite front-court flexibility for any lineup. I really like how she mixes her physical presence inside with her capability to stretch the defense from deep; she has a ton of upside.       Addisyn is a defender who can turn steals directly into fast-break offense. Her ability to read passing lanes and instantly convert defensive pressure into points makes her a legitimate threat on the floor. She has outstanding court vision and a true pass-first mentality that has led to several assists for her teammates. I love how she sets the stage defensively and effortlessly creates opportunities for everyone around her; she is an incredibly fun player to watch.
