What Matters Most at Illinois PGH Up Next Event
Tomorrow, we're having Illinois's first PGH Up Next event, featuring players from the 2031-2033 graduating classes. At this age, the evaluation is pure skill and readiness to play basketball. With players just entering middle school and others getting set for their last year, judging by competitive level wouldn't be accurate. The goal is to get an early look at the next generation of players and how they impact the game in different settings. Below are a couple of ways that players could stand out.
When it comes to standing out at showcase events, most prospects believe scoring will put them at the top of the list, and while there's some truth to that, the level of competition determines how valuable that really is. With this Up Next event being for the younger players, high scoring and selfishness won't be something that coaches or scouts in the building will automatically see as a standout performer. Personally, at this age, I'm more focused on who plays the game with an understanding of and love for it. Having a competitive edge is a major thing, but showing that you can play against and play with different levels shows more versatility. Being put in a truly structured game and not looking "lost" gives us a clearer view of players at this age that we should keep an eye on as the years go on.
Players, come ready to learn from your coaches, ask questions, and don't be afraid to play different roles or try different things during the 5v5 play. This event lets you build and learn at the same time without the pressure. I have only been lucky enough to see around 5 players out of the 25+ players that we have slated for this event, so for most of you, this will be my first real evaluation of you.
