More Creative Guards to See This Season

One way for a team to get open looks is to rely on a ball handler who can draw in defenders, see the floor well, and read the game at a high level. In Wisconsin, there's a handful of players returning this season who've been excellent hubs of their team's offense, and we'll highlight what they bring to the floor this evening. Let's talk about some guards with the talent and skill to swing high-profile games for their programs this winter.

The Living Word Lutheran wing has the athleticism to keep the Timberwolves at or near the top of the conference. Raymond's size and speed are something most schools in their conference don't have and have to send multiple defenders to keep her out of the paint. However, she's smart enough to know her gravity will open up looks for her teammates and get them the ball. She will be one of the best players in her conference over the next few seasons.

The Pius guard is a hard-nosed kid who doesn't mind playing through contact. Rivera is also an excellent athlete who can beat her initial defender off the dribble and create numerical advantages for her team. Rivera can also score from all three levels, forcing defenders to pick her up when she crosses halfcourt. She is also a skilled passer who reads defenses and gets her talented teammates the ball in position to score. She's a sneaky creative kid in a talented backcourt.

The Turtle Lake native is a guard who has played in a high-usage role and been reliable at the high school level. Tarman plays a role in everything her team does, and her teammates trust her to make things happen. She can crash the glass, jump-start her team's offense, and make the right pass when it's there. For a player who has to do a lot on both ends, she makes the game as simple as possible.

The Mosinee guard was thrust into a prominent role after her sister suffered a severe knee injury. Jirschele handled it as well as anyone could have expected and helped lead her team to the state tournament last season. She isn't a flashy guard, but she makes the right play every time down the floor. She doesn't turn the ball over and gets her team into their offense. Her ability to get her team into its offense and nullify a press gives them a chance in every game.
