Creative Guards to See This Season

One way for a team to get open looks is to rely on a ball handler who can draw in defenders, see the floor well, and read the game at a high level. In Wisconsin, there's a handful of players returning this season who've been excellent hubs of their team's offense, and we'll highlight what they bring to the floor this evening. Let's talk about some guards with the talent and skill to swing high-profile games for their programs this winter.

The Pacelli guard is a lead guard who doesn't pose a significant threat as a perimeter shooter. She can knock down perimeter jumpers when left open, but defenses are more scared of her getting downhill. Zdorik is a physical guard who draws in defenders to keep her out of lanes, which is when she finds open teammates. She has as much gravity with the ball as anyone in small-school basketball.

The Platteville native is a pass-first guard who has gotten the most out of the players around her each season. Richard has excellent instincts with the ball and makes quick passes to get her teammates out and running. She is another guard who doesn't look to shoot from the perimeter and finds ways to get to the ball in the paint, forcing defenses to collapse. She will help her team get better shots each time down the floor.

Betker has put together some impressive performances at a non-traditional power at the high school level. Betker is a guard who plays angles well and finds ways to get the edge on her defender at the point of attack. She isn't the most explosive guard, but she has a knack for creating numerical advantages as a lead guard. She gets into the paint, draws fouls, and gets to the free-throw line. She's an under-the-radar player who could help a regional program at the next level.

The Edgerton native has all the leadership qualities a coach could hope to find in a high school prospect. Jenny has the poise to play in high-pressure situations and never lets the moment faze her. She is the same player at the high school level that I saw when her [program_tooltip program_id='1230720' first='Team' last='Herro'] group made it to the EYBL portion of Nike Nationals. She reads defenses, knocks down shots, and is a pass-first lead guard at her core. She will be a valuable player for whichever program lands her at the next level.
