Winfield Generals’ season preview

WINFIELD - The Winfield Generals underwent a coaching change after their 2025-26 season ended with a 50-25 loss to Nitro in the Class AA regional tournament. Head coach Andy Johnson stepped down after the defeat. In steps Dustin Wells, and he is planning on leading the Generals to lofty heights. Here are the girls who are interested in college:

Jones can definitely help out an NCAA Division II team. Yes. Yes. Yes. She works her tail off every year to get better and better. She's an extremely coachable player. Her bag consists of everything a coach would want to see from an undersized center. She is physical. If she wants a rebound she will go and get it. Walls calls her "an elite rebounder." She trusts her length to block shots. There are no swats, here. Her numbers will likely increase dramatically this season as she will be the best player on a Class AA school after she earned Class AAAA all-state second team honors, a year ago. She'll need to shoot the basketball more this year, but that will likely happen as she will often be the tallest girl on the basketball court. The post moves are a work in progress, but she knows how to seal people off, fight for position, and has a pretty solid drop step. As long as a coach's school has good academics, where Jones can prepare for life after basketball, they should reach out to this General.

Keefer is going to be a dynamo. 100 percent. You know how I know. GW and Winfield played in GW's fall league this past weekend and Keefer didn't blink an eye at the pace of play, ridiculous, nor the level of competition. This young lady wants to get better. All. The. Time. She willingly plays defense as a freshman, and not only that, she asks for her reviews of her defense. She is a scoring point guard, but has no problem commanding her teammates around the floor to get them open. She is stout and won't be pushed around easily. Yeah. All of this and she is only 14 years old. If coaches want someone who is always adding something new to her game, take a flyer on Keefer. These next four years are going to be fun.

Walker is a young lady who has some great things to offer a head coach. When she's confident and given the green light to shoot the basketball, she is a consistent catch-and-shoot threat. Her defense and help defense are tremendous. She would definitely thrive out on the wing.

Coaches may want to jump on Ms. Ramey's bandwagon, right now. She may only be a freshman, but she knows she wants to play in college. She certainly has a basketball background. Her mother Jan played for Virginia Military Institute. Ramey shows spurts. She's going to be able to play 2 through 4 for the next four years in high school. She may be one of Walls' most physical players. When she catches fire from behind the arc, she is on. She hits her free throws. She is a willingly defender and cannot be pushed around. Her rebounding prowess is impressive.

Ramey is raw. Quite raw. Right now, she's making the transition from guard to the post. Although, what I have seen, she has the ability to make that transition. Although, what I have seen, she has the ability to make that transition. She can shoot the basketball and is comfortable around the rim. I would love to see her develop some post moves because the athletic ability is there. It is going to be fun to watch Ramey grow these next few years.
