On January 8th, the Sunrise Mountain Mustangs and the Canyon View Jaguars met in Peoria. These teams met in a rematch of the past two 5A conference state championship games. These two programs all year have appeared to be on a collision course for a third championship matchup in March. As an up-and-coming West Valley rivalry, the anticipation for this game was massive. After a close first quarter, the Mustangs jumped ahead on an 18-2 second quarter run en route to a 56-43 victory.

From the beginning of the game, it was clear what the biggest goal for the Mustangs on the night was. That was to play through Wiemann on both ends of the court.

The 6'2” post dominated the game by rolling off screens to the middle of the paint and finishing inside. She did a great job as well at absorbing contact to draw fouls. She showcased her ability to space the floor and knocked down deep shots from the perimeter. Late in the game on a free throw, she picked up her 1,000th career point.

From the moment Aguebor entered the game, her impact on the defensive end of the court shifted the game entirely.

With Wiemann in foul trouble, Aguebor was forced to take over as the primary interior defender. Aguebor was able to take the opposing post player out of the game offensively by using her length.

Along with her post game, her ability to step onto the perimeter and guard and also play as a help side defender as well was key in forcing multiple scoring droughts for the opposing team.

Playing on the wing in her natural position this season has allowed Dotray to be a Swiss Army knife. This game was another example of her using multiple skills to impact the game.

The Jaguars primary defensive focus was putting ball pressure on Dotray and attempting to force a turnover. She responded by playing as an elite connector in the passing game. Whether it was finding the open player on the other wing or moving around to force another player open, Dotray would do just that.

Her defense on the primary scorer for the Jaguars was the difference. Canyon View had its worst offensive output of the season shooting percentage wise and in turnovers.

In a tough game for the Jaguars, Tewksbury stood out as one of the spark plugs for Canyon View on the evening.

Defensively, her on-ball pressure disrupted the guard play of the Mustangs which forced key turnovers as her team attempted to make a run.

Offensively, she showed her ability to step onto the perimeter and knocked down a big shot and was very effective at moving the ball and trying to find an open teammate.
