October 27th was our first Prep Girls Hoops Top 250 Expo in Iowa. It was the last of four this fall and we had an insane amount of talented players in the gym. We will be finishing up our Expo reviews today with the last two teams. Now, we have a look at our last team as we look back at Team 16.
Mary Kate King - 5'5 PG - 2021 - Wahlert Catholic HS (IA) King was a guard who I hadn't seen prior to the event but came away very impressed. She is a very solid guard who isn't afraid to take the ball into traffic. Her handling ability is good and she can take her defender off the bounce to the rim. King had a very good day at the Top 250. Maddax DeVault - 5'6 G - 2022 - Nodawway Valley HS (IA) DeVault is a very good guard who can play both on and off-the-ball really well. She moves well without the ball and cuts to the basket really well. A lot of the time guards seem to stagnate but DeVault does not. She has a high basketball IQ and just simply makes plays on both ends of the floor. MaKayla Boatman - 5'7 SG - 2023 - North Polk HS (IA) Boatman is a physical defender who looks to be aggressive on that end of the floor. She was continually making plays on the defensive end and with her skill she can turn turnovers into offense rather quickly. Boatman showed a very good ability to shoot the ball from distance as well. Jenna Twedt - 5'8 SF - 2023 - Benton HS (IA) Twedt is a player who I hadn't seen and I was very happy with how she played for a freshman. She has a good frame with the ability to gain strength which will make her even stronger on the floor. Twedt plays with a very good motor and should be able to see the floor this upcoming winter. Samantha Stewart - 5'8 SG - 2020 - Mount Ayr HS (IA) Stewart can score from anywhere on the floor and was among the best pure scorers in the event, regardless of class. Her shot from the outside looked solid and she was able to get into the mid-range and hit off of the bounce. She changes speed with the ball in her hands really well and she performed tremendously. Kamryn Grissel - 5'9 SF - 2022 - Cedar Rapids Prairie HS (IA) Grissel has really improved all summer long and she showed her continued improvement especially off the catch. Grissel has a ton of length and she uses that length to play very good defense. She is very versatile with her length and skill allowing her to play multiple spots on the floor. Carlee Rochford - 5'10 SF - 2023 - New Hampton HS (IA) Rochford wasn't out on the AAU circuit this spring and I was excited she could make it to the showcase. I thought she played extremely well and she's going to end up being one of the top 2023's in the state. Rochford is a very athletic wing capable of getting to the basket and scoring. In the short time she was there I saw multiple good things from her. Annika Richardson - 5'11 F - 2021 - Northfield HS (MN) Richardson was one of the two Minnesota kids at the event and she played tremendously well. I thought that she got to the basket and scored well and she also was able to rebound the ball as well as anyone at the event, despite being four inches shorter than a teammate. Richardson has a good nose for the ball and showed it all day long. Jorja Hanselman - 6' PF - 2021 - Van Meter HS (IA) Out of everyone that I saw this summer in the 2021 class, Hanselman might be the most improved player from last year. Hanselman is loaded with all the intangibles that you can't teach. She is vocal on the floor and the bench, she plays with a high motor, and she rebounds at a high level. I wouldn't be surprised to see her grab a wealth of college interest going forward. Lucy Schonlau - 6'3 C - 2023 - Duchesne Academy HS (NE) Schonlau was the most intriguing player at the Expo because of her size. Most of the time when you see a 6'3 freshman, they are very awkward. Schonlau is not awkward at all and seems very comfortable in her frame. She rebounded well, showed good skill around the basket, and impressed me overall. I think she has the potential to turn into something very special depending on how hard she works the next few years.
