Wednesday night, I traveled West for a heavyweight matchup between Pewamo-Westphalia (D3, 14-0) and Fowler (D4, 12-1). Pewamo-Westphalia defeated Fowler 46-43 earlier in the season and Fowler looked to return the favor at home. The stakes surrounding this game were high, as the winner would likely finish as the Central Michigan Athletic Conference champion. Pewamo-Westphalia sprinted out of the gates to take a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and protected their lead throughout the game: carrying a 44-38 edge into the fourth.

The momentum shifted when Katie Spicer (25, SVSU XC) finished a 3-point play from the free throw line late to tie the game at 49. On the following possession, [player_tooltip player_id='1180533' first='Peyton' last='Eklund'] (27) delivered a dagger for the Pirates as she drilled a deep wing 3-pointer while being fouled on the landing. Peyton converted her free throw to finish off the 4-point play. After clutch free throws by [player_tooltip player_id='895711' first='Elly' last='Bengel'] (26) and [player_tooltip player_id='801852' first='Alonna' last='Thelen'] (26), Pewamo-Westphalia celebrated a 59-53 victory to complete their series sweep of Fowler. I expect to see both teams again late in the playoff tournament next month.

Elly jolted the PW offense right from the beginning. She scored 9 points in the first, carving through defenders to score layups and drilled a corner three. Elly used a quick sweep move then split defenders with her dribble to score another layup. She pursued multiple rebounds, created steals, and converted clutch free throws in the fourth quarter. Elly led the team with 18 points in their win against Fowler.

Katie turned in a spirited performance for Fowler on Wednesday. She deflected passes in the paint, corralled many rebounds, and snagged steals. Katie took a defensive rebound coast to coast for a layup and sank two smooth triples. She finished a baseline drive floater and-one to end the third quarter and drove hard to score the game-tying and-one layup late in the fourth quarter. Katie led the Eagles with 19 points.

Peyton was on fire from beyond the arc on Wednesday and her clutch shooting helped the Pirates secure a huge victory. Peyton knocked down four triples with a smooth stroke, blocked a shot, swiped the ball away, corralled rebounds, and dished a bounce pass assist on the money. Peyton put PW ahead for good late in the fourth on a deep wing 3 through contact, completing the 4-point play at the free throw line. Peyton ended the game with 16 points; she was crucial to the team's win.

Alonna was active on both ends for PW and her efficiency at the free-throw line helped secure an exciting win. She finished a contested layup off two feet in the paint, drove hard downhill to cause a foul, and swished a smooth 3-pointer from the wing. Alonna battled to secure rebounds, created steals, and dished assists to teammates. She converted 5 free throws at the line and poured in 9 points for the Pirates.

Elizabeth chased the ball all over the court and made impactful plays to keep Fowler close throughout the game on Wednesday. She dove on the floor to win 50/50 balls and chased down missed shots for offensive rebounds. Elizabeth used a shifty inside-out dribble to beat her defender and finished a strong and-one layup, plus the free throw. She made unselfish extra passes including a perfect hammer pass down the baseline to an open shooter. Elizabeth swiped the ball away to score a layup, banked in a 3-pointer, and converted 5 free throws at the line. She pressured ball-handlers and kept her hands active all night. Elizabeth scored 14 points for the Eagles and impacted the game in every way.

Adrianna is a freshman who I was eager to see on Wednesday and she certainly has potential to be excited about. Adrianna drained a confident straightaway 3 and added a transition layup with pace off the dribble. She used her length and mobility to generate multiple steals on the defensive end and secured multiple rebounds. Adrianna has a combination of mobility, height, and fundamental skills that make her a prototypical stretch-forward college prospect.

Paige gave Fowler a physical edge inside and was a fierce rebounder on Wednesday. She muscled her way through defenders, securing 7 offensive rebounds, and scored two contested putbacks. Paige used a high-rip move in the paint to draw a foul and knocked down a free throw. Paige swatted a shot away on defense and was a strong presence on the court for the Eagles.
