Sabino was fresh off of a big win over 6A powerhouse, Pinnacle. I was very intrigued to see what they could do today matching up with Horizon.
Although Horizon played very tough, the game was all Sabino.
Kiya Dorroh (6’1 2021 G/F) started off strong, scoring 10 points almost immediately. Dorroh led the entire game in scoring.
Kam Rhodes (5’5 2022 G) looked very strong, especially defensively. She got a lot of steals that turned into fast break points. Her passing ability is always super impressive to me, especially when you take into account her young age.
Kam Doty (5’6 2021 G) looked very good as well. She often broke her defender down and got to the basket. Once she got to the basket, she was met with a lot of hard fouls that went uncalled. Doty was persistent and kept driving to the basket, fully expecting contact and no call to be made. Eventually, she got a couple calls in the end.
Kadie Healy (5’11 2022 F) put in some solid work as well. I have been very clear about stating how much I love this kid’s game! She is a hustler and makes big time plays when her team needs them most. She came up big for Sabino on the defensive side, getting rebounds, and getting buckets. Healy is very good in transition due to her speed and just how well she fills her lane. It’s a simple skill but if you do it right, it makes a huge difference.
Sabino has won every game thus far into the tournament and honestly, I don’t think they have played a good game yet. They look sloppy at times and a little rusty, which is actually a compliment. If you can beat teams the way they are and you’re not playing all that well, imagine when you put the pieces all together.
I’m eagerly waiting for the day the Dorroh, Rhodes, and Doty can all go off and have big games on the same night but I think there’s too much basketball to go around for that to happen consistently. Very much looking forward to seeing Sabino this season, especially when they clean some things up…they are going to be scary.
