There will be college prospects all over the gym on Saturday, as the top two D1 teams in the Dayton area meet at 1:00 in Huber Heights. Fairmont and Wayne both come into the game unbeaten as the two GWOC schools will meet for the first of their two meeting this season. Currently, they are ranked #1 and #2 in the latest Dayton area power poll for D1.
Both teams have bigtime D1 college recruits and other players who have the skill to play at the next level. It all starts with the stars:
Best vs Best: [player_tooltip player_id="89318" first="Madeline" last="Westbeld"], the #1 2020 in the latest PGH Ohio rankings, will lead the way for the Fairmont Firebirds as the Notre Dame recruit has been off to a fast start this young season. She scored 36 points against the nations #2 ranked Hamilton Heights team out of Tennesee, and had 29 last week against Springfield.
Bree Hall is also ranked #1 in the PGH Ohio rankings in her class of 2021, as the multidimensional guard can do it all. She can take over a game with her athleticism, get to the rim, and lately has strengthened her perimeter game and is a threat from behind the arc.
Another D1 duo: While Westbeld runs the show from the guard spot, [player_tooltip player_id="89331" first="Madison" last="Bartley"] is also having a fast start to the season. The 6-foot-4 Belmont University signee has polished her game and is a threat from midrange into the paint. Bartley is strong enough to dominate the boards and control the paint defensively.
Wayne also has another D1 signee as [player_tooltip player_id="89333" first="Nyla" last="Hampton"] will head to Bowling Green after she graduates this summer. Hampton can control the tempo of the game with her guard play, great handles and has deadly range from the three.
Backcourt Duo: Fairmont will bring in a pair of talented senior guards with Makira Webster and Kierra Thornton. Webster has the capabilities to score, yet does a great job distributing the ball and controls the game for the Firebirds. Thornton does a good job on the boards and bring a lot of leadership to the Firebirds.
Welcome to the Show: Two newcomers who look to make contributions for Wayne are [player_tooltip player_id="91100" first="Alyssa" last="Hall"] and Jacquel Bronaugh. Hall has made a bigger offensive impact for the Warriors, but Bronaugh is starting to get settled in and should help in the paint for Wayne. Hall moved over from Beavercreek and Bronaugh comes in from Northmont.
Don’t forget about us: Fairmont also has two players who has flown under the radar so far, but will be impact players through the season. Kyndall Ketterer moved over to Fairmont from Oakwood and seems to be healthy, adding a versatile game to their attack. Ketterer can score from the perimeter or is physical enough to score underneath. Mallory Hullinger is only a sophomore and has been a pleasant surprise for Fairmont.
Making a name: Both Jaida Wolfork and Lovie Malone are players who have had good moments so far this season. Wolfork had a big night against Toledo Notre Dame, can score from the perimeter or put the ball on the floor. Malone is a rising junior with some college offers, and she is more of a versatile guard who can score if needed.
