It’s not the biggest accomplishment that the Wildcats want to achieve this season, but it is a step in the right direction. The game was played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse where the Wildcats were able to cut down the nets and celebrate the 55-40 victory over North Central.
Redemption
Lawrence North took this game very seriously for a couple of reasons. This Lawrence North senior class hadn’t won a county title coming into Saturday night after the Wildcats had won three in a row from 2013-2015. The ironic thing too is that it was North Central that had knocked them out in each of the past three seasons. That is why winning this game against North Central, made it even sweeter.
Lawrence North is the real deal
It was a good win for Lawrence North, but the scary thing was that they didn’t even play their best game. The offense was a little sluggish, however the defense carried the team for most of the night and was able to come away with the win. North Central turned the ball over 25 times, and couldn’t handle various full-court press looks from Lawrence North. The defense was so suffocating that it forced a bunch of tough shots, which led to a low % from the field. This just proves that Lawrence North is every bit the state title contender that it is perceived to be.
Team Contributions
The Wildcats had Sydnee Hughes come off the bench and played most of the second half, scoring 10 points. The usual contributors had solid performances as well, Kristian Young scored a team-high 15 points and had four steals, Jayla Smith had 14 points and five steals, and Davidson and Lauren Gunn each had three steals. For the Panthers, Tanyuel Welch scored 17 points, but no other player scored digits. Meg Newman scored nine points and Nakaih Hunter chipped in with eight.
North Central wanting more
As a team you shouldn’t want a moral victory, but it’s still important to look at the positives about the Panthers county tournament run. They are still seeking that signature win on the season, that shows that they should be mention among the state’s best. Of course, their is a good amount of the season left and they will have this opportunity again down the road.
