Central Buckeye Conference- midseason report card

It doesn't seem like we are closing in on the halfway point of the season, but indeed once we get through the Christmas season, we will be on the downhill slide toward the postseason, and a run at the state championships. Since we are nearing the halfway point, I will look this week at some of the Dayton area conferences and come kids who have burst onto the scene this season, and some kids that may have entered the season unknown, but have slowly made a name for themselves. Today a look at the Central Buckeye Conference, as Jonathan Alder and North Union lead their respective divisions in this league. Underclass Sleepers off to a Fast Start Journey Blevins, 5-11 Junior, North Union Has reached double figures in every game but the opener, where she scored nine points. Blevins has great bloodlines as her older sister Summer was a highly-regarded all-Ohio player a few years ago. Blevins leads the league in scoring at 15.3 points, with 7.3 rebounds and 3.5 steals. Her numbers are solid all the way around. Shelby Stoops, 6-0 Junior, Urbana She missed the first six games of the season, but has put up some nice numbers since she has been in the lineup. I saw her personally against Bethel where she dropped 17. Solid moves around the rim and will finish well when she gets in position. Good handles, excellent defensive disrupter, and strong on the boards. Terah Harness, 5-10 Junior, Tecumseh Solid kid with good college potential. Getting a chance to showcase her skills this year, scoring at nearly 13 points and 6.6 rebounds per game so far. Has had some big games, but also a few rough ones. Needs to work on consistency. Terah (pictured above) is a solid rebounder with excellent range shooting 36% from the three. Megan Freeman, 5-8 Junior, Kenton Ridge Has been a nice surprise for a team looking for kids to step up. Freeman dropped 30 in a 5-point win against the 5-time defending league champions from Ben Logan, and then had 11 against Tecumseh. Needs to be able to handle what is sure to come, defenses that will key on her. That will determine her success. Fab Freshman Gabby Russell, 5-10, Tecumseh After a slow start, Russell has stepped up her production for the Arrows. She is above what I consider the benchmarks for shooting (40% FG, 25% 3pt, 70% FT) and she is above all three of those marks. Has reached double figures in five of the last six games. Emma Garber, 5-3, Tecumseh Another freshman who has been steady all year for Tecumseh. Has not scored less than seven points in a game, which she has done three times. In her last three games, she has reached doubles in each one. Makenzie Chinn, 5-2, Tecumseh Let's make it a trio of Tecumseh freshman for this segment, as this team truly has three who are making major impacts every night. Has reached double figures three times so far, and is her quickness has been a key to the Arrows success, as she is third in the entire league in steals and fourth in assists. Needs to cut down on her turnovers to sharpen up her game, but will continue to improve. Breakout Seniors Kristen Young, 5-10, Indian Lake Coming into the season, Indian Lake was considered a contender for the league title. They have underachieved but have time to turn things around, and senior Kristen Young may be the one to do that. She leads them in scoring, rebounding and leads the entire league in shooting percentage. One to watch as the season progresses. Melissa Walborm, 5-9, Jonathan Alder Everyone knows seniors Abby Jones and Sydney Bourquin from their past successes, but Walbom is a kid who has really started off well for the Pioneers. Four games in double figures including 21 against Bellefontaine where she was nearly perfect from the field. Will need to continue her success for this team to make a deep run. Andi Meeks, 5-7, Shawnee While the team is struggling, Meeks is been the constant for the Braves. The team is 3-6, but her offense has aided in their three wins.
