That saying rings true, and as I tie that phrase into basketball, you too will understand what I mean when it comes to that phrase. In this game, there are levels to this. You master one thing, you move up. Or let's say you master one move, you add something else to your bag. You then go out and compete, and the more you compete, you gain confidence in your skills and abilities. What I love about this sport is that if you so desire to excel in it, you are going to find people who will help push you. You are going to take bumps and bruises along the way, but how you respond and handle that adversity will help elevate your game and who you are as a person. That's the one thing I have taken from watching basketball over the years. The girls who get knocked down and get back up and want to compete against the best, those are the ones who go on and compete at a higher level. Like I said, iron sharpens iron.   As we enter a new season of play shortly, I feel the new girls who will enter high school ball this season will bring a renewed energy to a lot of programs. I am not saying they are going to come in and just set the world on fire. I am saying that they will come in and help either lay the foundation or build upon the foundation already laid. The programs that are always contenders have a way of attracting girls who are willing to live by the motto “iron sharpens iron.” With that being said, the game itself gets better because kids want competition. They want to be the best. They want to be challenged, so they can rise above and compete at the next level. To do so, you need the phrase “iron sharpens iron” on the frontal lobe. We have kids in our state who are ready, and this new wave of basketball players will add to the fabric of an exciting product we have going on in our state. Women's basketball is on an upswing, and the 29s are going to be a nice addition to what's going on.   Here are some 2029s who are ready to get down and compete with their teammates. Iron sharpens iron.    Someone who is going to bring a lot of value to this SM ball club, this kid has all around game and is willing to do whatever it takes to elevate her team. A combo guard who can play with the ball in her hands or without. She can put it on the floor and go get a bucket, or knock it down from the perimeter. She's going to contribute defensively by locking up an opponent, get steals, as well as rebound the basketball. Stone Memorial has something brewing up on the plateau. Keep an eye out for this program as well as this young lady, as she helps Stone Memorial become a contender for postseason play.     This young lady will be a nice addition to the GH program. Athletic combo guard who is aggressive to the rim and will step out and shoot the 3. She is a nice pace and space player who can exploit a team's weakness. She is also solid on the defensive end, rebounds the basketball, and competes from tip to the final whistle. She's going to carve out some playing time early as GH looks to go deep into the tournament this year. Look for her to gain confidence and be a special player down the stretch and for years to come. This season is going to be her coming-out party. Once she gets acclimated to the speed of the high school game, she is going to help contribute mightily to the Green Hill program.     An exciting prospect who is about to cause havoc on the basketball floor. A crafty ballhandler who can drop dimes and get buckets. She's an aggressive ballplayer who is going to cause fits offensively, but when she is on the defensive end, she's going to put the opponent in a seatbelt. AZ is a strong defender who has a knack for turning her defense into offense. Getting steals is what she is about, and that aggressive mindset leads to buckets going the other way. Quick hands and feet, this young lady is going to come in and play her part and excel at it. Look for GCA to go deep into postseason play, and this young lady will be an important piece of what they do.     A heady ball player who possesses speed and quickness. She can handle the rock, orchestrate an offense, get to favorable spots, and finish consistently. She creates chaos on the defensive end, being physical, getting steals, and deflections. She's a competitor and willing to go toe-to-toe with anyone. Has a “dawg” mentality she brings to the table every night. Don't let the size fool you, this kid is going to create problems, and in doing so, she is going to help elevate her ball club. Solid kid who is an exciting prospect.     A kid who has all around game, she is a bucket filler who has a nice outside shot. Plays with a ton of confidence, this kid is going to go at you, through you, and will finish from anywhere on the floor. Has crafty handles that enable her to get to the rim; she can not only score the basketball, but facilitate the rock as well. She's a tough competitor who keeps growing every time she is out there. Look for her to be something special and one who will turn heads down the road. Solid ball player who competes on both ends of the floor.
