Back in the day, I made it a point to find that player who was being overlooked but it’s so spread out now and when you don’t have cooperation from clubs on simple things, like a legitimate roster, it makes it somewhat difficult at times but one thing I know is that I’m glad I attended The M.T. Rice to close out my holiday search and here are some of the top performers from the GOLD in part 1
Jillian SowellJillian Sowell-5’11 G (Southlake Carroll) watching from afar, she opened the 7th place game up with a 30 footer and I’m thinking “who is this” but after she comes back to defensive end, I knew and I really knew years ago. West Texas A&M is getting a steal, she does that too btw, but her range, attacking the basket and rebounding have always stood out as well as her desire as she put on a scoring exhibition
Nyanna Robertson Ly’taisha Jefferson
Nyanna Robertson-5’6 G (Boswell) I kept thinking about Roswell and she definitely was unidentified until I used my search bar and realized I was given the wrong last name but what I said about the sophomore a couple of years ago was on the money, it always is and watching her spin in traffic for baskets, under control, as well as shoot the long ball will have her added to Watch List
Ly’taisha Jefferson-5’5 G (Trimble Tech) immediately grabbed my attention threading the needle off the dribble and when you have that type of court vision coupled with speed and can make that pass while being guarded, that’s huge and she falls into that size don’t matter category because she can play. She got to the basket almost at Will and Gracefully finished time after time, she too will be added to the PGH Texas 2022 Watch List
Kadia Ward MidlothianKadia Ward-5’7 G (Midlothian) didn’t realize she was a freshman until now, she will be added to the Watch List because heady guards always impress me and she sees the floor, can create her shot and as well as attack the basket. She understands how to create contact and get to the line but I was also impressed with her defense as well as timing to block shots
Shamaryah Duncan-5’11 G (Waco Midway) explosive off the ground and to the basket as she can definitely find ways to score. She brings heat, on both ends and with her frame and athleticism, she’ll make the transition smoothly at Wichita State but on top of her shooting the mid to long consistently as well as attacking and scoring after contact and acrobatically, she sees the floor as well
Jakoriah Long-5’8 G (Waco Midway) not sure if the senior guard is signed or not but she can play and it didn’t take me “long” to realize what I was looking at, pun intended. She’s very athletic, she attacks from everywhere and can shoot the long ball but she sees the floor, that’s very important and plays the passing lane which is also very important because, with her speed, that’s a layup going the other way, yeah she’ll be added to 2020
Maya LintonMaya Linton-5’10 F (Timber Creek) she’s not quite at “the magic number” which is 6’0 and virtually assures a next level spot but she plays like it and she put on a #BEASTLIKE performance as she sowed many things including “you won’t outwork her” She attacks from the wing fiercely and effortlessly and powers her way inside the paint. Putbacks galore, she rebounds on both ends and she’s only a sophomore that will be JEFFERSONIZED on the 2022 list, that means she’s Movin On Up
Kelliah Walker-5’7 G (Timber Creek) nicknamed KJ for obvious reasons but let me spin it “knockdown jumper” and top that one. She opened up the game on fire from long range and set the tone in what turned out to be a back and forth battle but her poise simply left me speechless at an event I covered in July as her maturity has definitely been a plus. She’s under control, scores off the dribble and sees the floor, she too will be moving up on the 2022 list
