WNBA player makes surprise appearance at Oregon youth basketball event

On Sunday at the 3x3 Hoop League, I was laser-focused on freshmen in preparation for the 2029 watchlist update. I spent most of Day 2 scouting the JV/Frosh Division action on Court 3.

While capturing video and taking notes, I noticed a long queue forming next to the media table. At the front was Los Angeles Sparks 6-foot-4 forward Cameron Brink, who made a surprise appearance at the youth development event, posing for pictures with players. The Mountainside High School graduate stayed to visit and watch games.

On Oct. 25, at her alma mater, Brink will host the fourth annual Next 22, an invite-only day camp for elite 7th and 8th-grade players in Oregon. Several of the class of 2029 standouts at the 3x3 Hoop League were past attendees. Here are four freshmen who were hooping on Sunday, Day 2:

Five-foot-5 freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1264926' first='Sam' last='Harris'] has the potential to be one of the best point guards in the state. Harris trained with [program_tooltip program_id='1035055' first='Northwest' last='Select'] 14U over the summer, and opposing club teams had no answer for her. She's a quick and shifty ball handler who sees plays her peers don't. She has excellent rhythm, lateral movement, and change of speed on the bounce. She can create her own three-point shot and finish downhill. Jesuit graduated starting point guard Audrey Bayless, so there will be a big role for a Crusaders player to fill this upcoming season.

Harris is competing in the 3x3 Hoop League this fall. Her [program_tooltip program_id='1035055' first='Northwest' last='Select'] freshmen squad competed against upperclassmen on Day 2. Harris stood out as a top player in both of her games. She got to the rim in a variety of ways — hesitation, between, crossover, behind the back — and finished with smooth athleticism. She's a good shooter, too. She drained a catch-and-shoot three and a side-step pull-up three. She slung no-look dishes, kickouts, and entry passes. She was consistently active off the ball and made timely cuts. Harris is one to watch this upcoming season.

Five-foot-4 freshman point guard [player_tooltip player_id='1266177' first='Mady' last='Nanna'] was a bouncy and vibrant playmaker at the 3x3 Hoop League on Day 2. Nanna shot the lights out in her first game, netting four from behind the arc in under 15 minutes. She handled on-ball pressure with poise and took care of the rock. She was patient in the pick-and-roll action and delivered the timely bounce pass. She changed speed to burst downhill to her strong side. She made the right read whether to take it to the rim or pass out. She played solid perimeter defense and snagged long rebounds. Nanna is excited to play at Canby in her first year.

Five-foot-8 guard [player_tooltip player_id='1275380' first='Melia' last='Turner'] ran with [program_tooltip program_id='1035055' first='Northwest' last='Select'] 14U over the summer and was one of the team's best off-ball defenders, hunting passes and pressuring passing lanes. She's a hard worker on and off the court. At the 3x3 Hoop League, Turner was aggressive on defense and showed her ability to attack the rim. She consistently found the lane and got to the bucket. She finished a contested layup through contact. She had quick feet to stay in front of her opponent and beat them to the spot. She rebounded and pushed the pace, quickly getting to the perimeter on the bounce to catch her opponent off guard. Turner will join her sisters Keslyn and [player_tooltip player_id='899491' first='Kaylee' last='Turner'] at North Clackamas Christian. The Saints should be a 1A state title contender this year.

Five-foot-7 freshman guard [player_tooltip player_id='1321203' first='Katie' last='Kidd'] is a competitor who showed her versatility and ability to get after it in the post on both sides against upperclassmen at the 3x3 Hoop League on Day 2. Kidd has great length and game IQ. She was effective in the pick-and-pop. She got to the rim and drew fouls. She won rebounds on both sides. She tipped entry passes and got in passing lanes to force steals. Kidd showed off her perimeter game as well. She beat her defender up top and attacked the rim, finishing with her weak hand over the help defender. She had a solid perimeter shot, was able to bang it in out of rhythm, and drained the corner three. She had good vision and made great entry passes. She did a lot of the little things — setting effective screens, making timely cuts, and selling strong ball fakes. Kidd will join fellow club teammate [player_tooltip player_id='1264926' first='Sam' last='Harris'] at Jesuit this upcoming season.
