The first quarter started off a little slow for both teams. At the end of the first quarter, Perry was up 7-3. Offensively both teams struggled when it game to getting buckets. It was something that carried over into the second quarter despite both teams having good ball movement to set up shots. At halftime, the score was 18-13 Perry on top.
Some adjustments were made for both teams before coming out to open the third quarter. Both teams clearly made adjustments and it showed. Shots were finally starting to fall and things were clicking.
Chandler was playing really aggressive and really physical, led by seniors Amara Wilson and Victoria Mason. Defensively, Wilson had a huge blocked shot, while Mason was a rebounding machine for the Wolves, working to cut away at Perry’s lead.
Things got a little heated for the two teams going into the end of the fourth quarter, creating some electricity in the building for the fans. Perry’s Tatyanna Clayburne was fouled hard while driving to the basket, with refs calling it a technical. Clayburne missed both of her shots from the line, and upon Perry’s attempt to get the ball into play, Wilson had a huge steal that resulted in a clutch three-point shot by senior Victoria Perez right before the buzzer.
Going into the fourth, Perry held on to a slight 32-29 lead. Perez was a central part of Chandler’s rally, as she hit back-to-back 3’s in less than a minute. However, that was the spark that ignited Perry’s flame, as Madison Conner went on to hit a three of her own. The Pumas went on to win it from there.
Junior Jayden James was the difference maker on the court tonight for the Pumas. She did a great job making sure that she was down the court near the basket, and the team did a good job with long passes when getting the ball down to her.
The two teams will meet again on February 11th at Perry High School in what will be the final game of the regular season for both teams.
