Continue ReadingNebraska is known for alot of things, like Runza, Valentino’s and Nebraska football. In girl’s high school basketball, no program is more prominent on a national level and has done more for the development of the game than South Sioux City. Since 1994, no program has been more prominent nor more imitated than the Cardinals, but this year has been a bit of down year, sitting at 9-8 going into Saturday’s match-up against River Cities Conference rival Omaha Roncalli, who is having a nice year with a senior dominated team at 10-7. SSC’s post game and perimeter shooting was too much for the Crimson Pride speed and quickness Saturday afternoon, netting a 75-52 victory.
Samantha Mausbach (5’7″ Senior, Guard, Omaha Roncalli): An outstanding pure athlete who has a strong upper body that can play through contact around the basket, Mausbach is one of the best athletes in the River Cities Conference. She is a dogged defender who attacks the ball, but she is right hand dominant with her ball handling; however, if she gets going downhill with the right hand, she will get to the rim. She has an adequate perimeter shot, but she needs to work on a quicker release. Mausbach would be a nice prospect for a smaller school that has a chance to work with her perimeter shooting.
Abbey Schwarz (5’5″ Junior, Point Guard, Omaha Roncalli): I have seen alot of fast players in my career, but Schwarz may be the fastest, end to end player I have ever seen. Slight of build and not a great shooter, Schwarz attacks the lane to set up her teammates for good looks. She needs to work on her jump shot, but she is a physical player who is not afraid to get into the fray and get after loose balls and create chaos on the defensive end.
Claire Wilson (5’10” Junior, Forward, Omaha Roncalli): Wilson is a long player with a soft touch. She can attack a little bit off the bounce, but is more comfortable running the floor and attacking the offensive glass. She needs to grow into her body and put on 10-15 pounds of muscle to be really effective at the next level, but with her and Schwarz returning for the Crimson Pride next year, Roncalli has a nice foundation going into the off-season after their six seniors graduate.
Kyra Fischer (5’10” Junior, Guard, South Sioux City): With the graduation of Division I and Super State point guard McKenna Sims, Fischer is forced to play out of position at the point for South Sioux City. A natural wing, Fischer does see the floor well and is strong enough to make accurate passes from 40-50 feet away. A very good catch and shoot player, Fischer needs to work on her off the bounce and midrange game, and she also needs to work on her athleticism. She will be a very highly recruited player by many of the NAIA schools in the powerful GPAC this summer.
Hannah Strom (5’7″ Junior, Guard, South Sioux City): A deadly three point shooter, Strom is a zone buster who has good range beyond the three point line. She is not going to go to the rim with effectiveness, and she is most effective playing off of dribble penetration from other players and finding an open spot. Strom needs to look to attack the basket more to diversify her game and to get herself to the free throw line, where she is efficient at.
Jalen Galvin (6’0″ Sophomore, Forward, South Sioux City): Galvin is a long, athletic forward who has good instincts for finding space on the floor and hitting the offensive glass. She has a good feel for interior passing, with numerous assists to senior Nyabuay Diew for easy baskets. I would like to see what Galvin will do with an expanded role this time next year, but she will need to work on her face up game and perimter shooting. Definitely a player to keep an eye on.
