Region 1 has a variety of schools from different areas, from Abilene to Lubbock to El Paso and outside of the Dallas area so excuse me if my geography is off but as I’ve stated many times, I’m an evaluator that is one of the best I know at doing this so I’ll go back later and drop something on the smaller conferences as well as private schools but let me give a special S/O to a couple of extraordinary players from the 2020 class out of the region, [player_tooltip player_id="66106" first="Sarah" last="Andrews"] (Baylor) and [player_tooltip player_id="66111" first="Harmoni" last="Turner"] (Harvard) who did what point guards are supposed to do in order to be considered great, they made those around them better and either you get that or you don’t but here are some of the top point guards I have PERSONALLY seen from the region
2021
[player_tooltip player_id="136316" first="Autumn" last="Smith"]-Arlington Martin
Smith just does so many things well, she attacks and finishes, she can catch and shoot and she rebounds well, especially for her size but she understands how to control the tempo and set teammates up for easy baskets, she pushes the ball in transition and sees the floor going full speed
[player_tooltip player_id="136333" first="Vanessa" last="Herrera"] -El Paso Eastlake
Herrera showed me a totally different side of her game at the Katy Classic last season and her explosiveness with the ball made things happen as she could go acrobatic and finish or throw no looks on the money but her steady ballhandling and controlling the tempo stood out as well
[player_tooltip player_id="136356" first="Alyssa" last="Bonilla"] -El Paso Csanutillo (Missouri Western)
Bonilla showed over and over that size doesn’t matter, when you can play and be it playing full court defense, playing the passing lane or just being everywhere on the court creating havoc, she did it yet she sliced and diced through traffic, under control and got the ball to the right people, plus she can shoot it
2022
[player_tooltip player_id="65913" first="Michayla" last="Gatewood"]- DeSoto
Gatewood is one of those point guards that just gets the job done and she adjusts her game to make it happen. If she doesn’t get injured, Desoto probably would’ve won state, she can control a game by setting teammates up yet she also has shown she can take over a game if needed
[player_tooltip player_id="135366" first="Cammie" last="McKinney"]-Hebron
McKinney sold me in middle school, haven’t seen much of her since the 7th grade but I called her a #D1Lock back then so glances of her progressing on video proves that I was right, yet again as she just brings so much to the table. She sees the floor, handles the ball, under pressure, and has range
[player_tooltip player_id="135404" first="Nyanna" last="Robertson"]-Boswell
Robertson’s ability to push the ball coast to coast under pressure is second to none as she can hit defenders with one of her many moves and leave them standing still yet she can also thread the needle as well as take defenders off the dribble and score
[player_tooltip player_id="135405" first="Ly’taisha" last="Jefferson"]-Trimble Tech
Jefferson is another speedy guard, with the ball, who stays under control and that first step in the open court just sets up everything. If you run with her, she can get you the ball yet she also can run the sets in the halfcourt game not to leave out she can drain it from outside
[player_tooltip player_id="135395" first="Deucee" last="Reed"]-Lewisville
Reed is a prototype PG that just gets the job done and I don’t know what her assist to turnover ratio is but I’m sure it’s high because she thinks the game ahead of the play which enables her to set teammates up for easy baskets but she also can score if needed
2023
[player_tooltip player_id="96128" first="Amarachi" last="Kimpson"]-Little Elm
Kimpson sold me years ago as a clutch player, can’t remember if t was 6th grade when she caught my eye but I haven’t stopped looking and walking in gyms seeing her drop NBA threes is common but so is her mindset on running a squad, to perfection because she gets pluses across the board
[player_tooltip player_id="134030" first="Tristen" last="Taylor"]-Duncanville
Taylor has started ab impressive high school resume as starting at the one, where the game starts, as a freshman and leading her team to state. I was more amazed when I saw her at the Sandra Meadows Classic that I had already written about her in the 7th grade but her speed, ballhandling and comprehension all played a huge part in them winning state, awe yeah, she can shoot it too
