Calumet vs. Turner

Turner has been a buzzsaw all season. I've had several coaches text me this week saying "How was Turner #4?" Only blemish on a 26 win season was to Class A Favorite Caddo. Calumet girls have been the feel-good story of the season, for a team that was 2-21 two seasons ago. I think a lot of people expected a huge jump, because they had heard about [player_tooltip player_id='1656587' first='Hayden' last='Mayfield'], but I don't know if people were thinking State Tournament.

20+ scorer as a freshman, Mayfield had 35 in Calumet's come from behind win against defending State Champion Hammon in the Area Consolation game. I hear opposing student sections complaining about her FT trips, but she's so strong and picks her spots so well that its hard to keep her off the line unless you just want her to score at the rim all day, and if you give her too much space she's just going to shoot over the top. Tough matchup for Calumet in first round, but Mayfield good enough to start working her way up the State Tourney scoring lists already.

Calumet guard is lighting quick. Body control is getting really good, able to finish layups in traffic. Mayfield rebounds well enough that Lila is able to release and get easy scores. Has really improved her defensive IQ. If she stays out of foul trouble she truly does so many things on defense at an elite level. Speedster has an offer from Southwestern College in Kansas, and games on the big stage should lead to more college interest.

Red Oak vs. Whitesboro

Red Oak has spent most of the season at #1 and might be the odds-on favorite. They match up with Whitesboro, a school where Red Oak head coach Josh Fields spent time as head coach. Whitesboro got hot at the right time, knocking off #13 Crowder and #7 Varnum on the last two days of the Area Tournament. Whitesboro have an extremely balanced scoring attack with three sophomores Jemma Arnold, Jaycee Lawson, and McKinley Jones each averaging 9 points a game, and Senior Katie Long averaging 8.

Red Oak's three stars were very close in scoring average when I wrote about them mid-season, Branscum's has went up to about 17 a game to be comfortably their leading scorer. Knockdown shooter poised for a big time State Tournament, as I'm picking Red Oak to come away with the whole thing.

Kiowa vs. Stringtown

I was able to watch Kiowa vs. Varnum in the Area Finals at Prague and was very impressed with Kiowa. These two schools are only separated by 20 miles (Pittsburg, already in the B-II semi-finals is only a few miles from Kiowa) so it speaks to the quality of basketball we are getting from this area. I haven't gotten to see Stringtown until this weekend. Tons of senior leadership from a school making their first State Tournament in half a century.

I was really impressed with Bain last weekend. While she had came to a Prep Girls Hoops Showcase before, Kiowa is in Southeast Oklahoma so she has taken her talents to Texas' showcases where I hadn't gotten to see her before. Soft hands, finishes really well. Had big lead against Varnum and are able to play deliberate through her until they get something they like. Have some quicker lineups they utilize without her, but are at their best with all that she brings to the table.

Medford vs. Seiling

Super impressed with the steps the Medford girls have taken in the last five years. When I coached in Cherokee Strip Conference several years ago, their coach at the time was always irritated that he had never gotten an All-Conference selection for any of his players. A lot has changed for Medford who has back to back 20-win seasons under Christy Kelley, and our making their first State Tournament since 2002. Seiling girls are making their 12th straight State Tournament, bringing home the Gold Ball in 8 of those trips. Underrated player for Seiling that I predict to have a big State Tournament is sharpshooter Cameron Little Coyote. I talk to legendary coach Brent Rousey often, and he has been singing her praises all year. I think she is going to make some huge shots this weekend.

Talented triplets will do a lot for your basketball program. Kaydence, the tallest of the 3, scores 15 a game for Medford this season, while her sisters Kenna and Kassidy combine for about 18. Kaydence was an All-Conference Selection, CTB Sports Northwest All-Star, named to the VYPE Top 100, and gets to play in the new OG&E Coliseum this year as Medford's emergence as a big time program has solidified.

Really burst through as Seiling's star this season, as the multi-talented 6 footer is pouring in 17 a game for the Wildcats. Will be taking her talents to Edmond next year to play for Oklahoma Christian University. Was an absolute force against Calumet at Area.
