CIF High School Preview: Top Upperclassman Perimeter Defenders

We live in an offensive-minded era. Three point assassins, run and gun, high-flyers, stretch bigs, you name it. With that comes a shortage of elite high-level defenders, particularly on the perimeter. Who can stay in front of shifty guards? Who can contain elite scorers? Who has the length and athleticism to guard prolific wings? Who has the mentality and motor of a defensive menace?

Destinee was an All-League 1st-team Mission League selection as a sophomore. Quick, competitive guard who keeps the ball in front of her. Turns defense into offense. Excels in the open floor. Natural ball hawk who can shine in man-to-man or zone defense. Destinee is cerebral on both ends. Excellent guard rebounder. Understands how to pressure the ball without fouling. She is in store for a huge junior season.

She will rip the ball away from you like stolen lunch money! High-IQ on-ball pest who regularly forces guards into 5 second violations. What stands out in particular? Quick reflexes and natural instincts! It can get tricky inbounding the ball against Sovereign. She stays alert on and off-the-ball. Sovereign can provide a scoring punch as well. 15 ppg as a sophomore last year.

High-energy versatile defender with elite on-ball pressure. Big guard with physical tools that give her an edge. What does Deja bring to the table defensively? Perimeter size, physicality, mental toughness, and a high basketball IQ. She can score the ball as well. You have to play hard on both ends against Deja, making her an ideal option to matchup against the opposing team's top guard.

Jada is a 2-way standout poised for a huge junior season. Long, wiry athlete who can jump, run, and move her feet. Benjamin covers ground quickly in the paint and on the perimeter. Impressive timing as a shot blocker. Has the length and anticipation to jump the passing lane and take it the other way. Legacy can guard inside and out at the high school level. One of the highest ceilings in the state on the defensive end.
