Top Wings / Forwards of the Future at PGH: Up Next

The future of girls basketball took the floor in Plainfield, Illinois this past weekend at the first annual Prep Girls Hoops showcase for top middle school prospects. Length, athleticism, rebounding, and the ability to make the right reads were all on display from the Classes of 2031, 2032, and 2033 — and several emerging wings and forwards at PGH: Up Next showed flashes of each. One player even earned the title of most dominant player of the day. King brings a unique combination of length, athleticism, and tenacity that makes her difficult to stay in front of. She excelled at slashing to the hoop and was able to finish drives at a higher clip than most of her peers. She can also knock it down from three and even displayed flashes of an emerging post up game. Her ability to rebound and play through contact was also outstanding for her age. King screams “future match up nightmare” and appeared to be the most dominant player on the floor for much of the day.     Dockery's physical tools immediately caught my attention — she looked taller than her listed 5 foot 5 size and her athleticism and wingspan helped her do a little bit of everything. From sinking a momentum-changing three just before the end of the half to using her length to consistently corral rebounds and make pin-point outlet passes down the court, Dockery did a great job taking advantage of her physical tool-kit to rise above the competition. She's listed in our system as a guard but with her literal broad wingspan, I see some potential as a wing. Dockery also moved well on defense with quick feet and good lateral movement. Definitely an emerging wing to watch.     It was hard to miss Okapal on the court. She towered over much of the competition and presented match-up problems in the frontcourt. Okapal already has good instincts around the glass, though improving consistency on her put-back ability will make her a bigger offensive threat. She showed some nice touch at the free throw line and was able to sink those for much of the day. I'm especially excited to see Okapal get coached up at the high school level to continue learning how to leverage her size advantage and length with greater purpose and intention.     Rychtytskyj has the size and feel to develop into an intriguing frontcourt player. What stood out most was her basketball IQ — she consistently anticipated where rebounds would land and used her body to establish position before the ball arrived. That same awareness showed up when she drew contact, understanding when to throw the ball up and force the refs to see she was being held. Rychtytskyj also wasn't afraid to get to her spots offensively and drive directly to the hoop. An emerging player with stand out processing skills and strong physical tools.
