PGH Sophomore ID Camp: The best of Team 6

Last week we covered the best of the best from the Prep Girls Hoops Freshman Showcase. This week we're back for more with our second event of the month; the PGH Sophomore ID Camp. The event, which was held at Maple Grove Middle School on Sunday, featured more than 100 players from around Minnesota. We saw great performances from some familiar faces, while others crossed our path for the first time. PGH scouts Grant McGinnis, Tony Ragulen, Paxyn Rendahl and I were on site all afternoon and have been breaking down the highlights one team at a time. Here is the best of Team 6.    Bergan was one of the most talked about players this summer, and for good reason! At the Sophomore ID Camp, the 5'11 guard showed exactly why she's a top-25 ranked prospect in the class of 2029. Fluid in her athleticism and super smooth with the ball in her hands, Rinlee made quick work of showing all that she can do on offense. The Lewiston-Altura standout muscled her way to the basket and finished her shots with skilled footwork and a soft touch, she effortlessly elevated over defenders in the midrange, and played with a sense of pace and timing that you just can't teach. Having just picked up her first offer from Winona State, Bergan's ceiling continues to rise.     The growth in Viger's game over the past 12 months has been nothing short of astronomical. It only took a few minutes at the Sophomore ID Camp to see that all her hard work is beginning to pay off. From smooth catch-and-shoot threes to Euro-steps through traffic in transition, the 5'11 forward has added a great deal of versatility to her toolbelt. What hasn't changed though, is her relentless effort on both ends of the floor. All day long, Siri hustled for loose balls, defended with energy and intensity, fought hard on the glass, and never gave up on a single play. With multiple graduations opening up the Stars roster, Viger has the potential for a breakout season with Southwest Christian.     Gomez was one of the most intriguing prospects we watched on Sunday. While the 5'6 guard doesn't exactly jump off the page in terms of athleticism, her fundamental skillset rivaled some of the top-ranked players in the gym. On offense it was Samia's skilled ball handling, innate abilities as a playmaker and passer, and ability to use her strength on the drive that made her stand out. On the other end of the floor, the St. Paul Harding sophomore's hustle and ability to frustrate and get in the heads of her opponents was exciting to see. Constantly vocal on both ends, relentlessly positive, and a coach on the floor, Gomez played no small part in Team 6's undefeated record.     A late addition to Team 6's initially short-handed roster, Goettlicher made an immediate impact as soon as she stepped on the court. The 5'8 guard showed no hesitation in getting her hands dirty, using her strength and physicality to her advantage on the defensive end. On offense, Jazmyn excelled at seeing openings in the defense, allowing her to get downhill and finish at the rim on a regular basis. Combining a strong set of fundamental skills and a significant amount of hustle, it's no surprise that she was a standout performer for Nicollet last season. Earning a starting role for the Class A Raiders, Goettlicher averaged 16.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 3.5 steals per game as a freshman.     A true workhorse on both ends of the floor, Johnson gave a solid performance at Sunday's Sophomore ID Camp. As she so often does, the 5'7 guard out-worked nearly every one of her opponents. Alyson's physicality, hustle, and willingness to fight for each rebound, steal, or 50-50 ball made all the difference, creating extra possessions and points for Team 6. While at times she may have struggled to get her shots to fall, that certainly didn't stop her from making her presence felt. The Andover sophomore brought the same intensity and effort on each possession, continued to look for chances to score, and didn't let her frustration show for a single moment.     As is so often the case, Porter's high energy play on the defensive end helped her stand out at the Sophomore ID Camp. Standing at 5'8, Felicity brings ample length and plenty of quickness to the court. Her signature burst of speed, and light, bouncy lateral movement were key attributes for Team 6, as they helped the Eagan sophomore stay in front on defense, and create disruptions in the other teams offense. While her frame may not be the biggest or the strongest, Porter's tenacity as a defender allows her to make contributions that don't always show up on the stat sheet.     Both long and lanky, Larson is a 6'0 forward whose game doesn't just live in the paint. While she is certainly capable of scoring from the block on offense and protecting the rim on defense, the Centennial sophomore's greatest attribute is her versatility. While she's not the quickest player on the court, Brooklyn's ability to stretch the floor and take her game out to the perimeter helped open things up significantly for Team 6. On top of that, she isn't afraid to let the ball fly from three. Last winter, Larson appeared in 17 games for the Cougars, carving out a rotational spot for herself on the varsity roster. This season we expect to see her take on even more.
