Prospect Spotlight: Drea Brumfield (2022)

Prep Girls Hoops Washington is yet to release the Freshman watchlist, but one name that will certainly be on there is Drea Brumfield. Drea was a force on the youth scene with the Xpress program out of Chehalis, but youth success does not always translate to the high school level. Her game has translated quite well, as displayed in a game versus 3A top 10 team, Peninsula. She ended with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks in a big win. She seems to grow a little bit every time I have seen her, but she is roughly around 6'2 and appears to still be growing. She has long limbs that will continue to gain strength as she gets older. While most girls 6'2 or taller are restricted to playing the post, WF West Head Coach, Tom Kelly, utilizes Drea all over the floor. Some possessions she will play the 1 or 2 handling the ball versus pressure, then she will post up and play some 5. Her versatility and skill set is very impressive for her young age, but she is not even close to reaching her full potential yet. Drea's older sister, Erika, is a senior All-State player who will be headed to Portland State next year, after recovering from a knee injury suffered early this season. Erika's presence is greatly missed for the Bearcats, but Drea has stepped into a big role as a freshman that will only make her better in the future. Drea's recruitment is still very early, but she has already begun to receive the interest of multiple Division 1 schools. Georgetown University, Grand Canyon, Eastern Washington, Idaho and more have already begun to show some interest. She projects as a "BCS" or power 5 prospect, but her family will guide her in the right direction years down the road when it is decision making time. She comes from a great basketball family and all around basketball community in Chehalis. They truly travel in numbers to support their girls basketball. Her father is also an assistant on the WF West squad, so basketball is truly a family gig. With a supportive family, dedicated high school coaches behind her and all of the talent to match, Drea Brumfield will be one to watch for years to come as she continues to work hard in the gym and maintain her solid focus in the classroom. Get to know Drea: 1) How has it been adjusting to high school basketball? It hasn't been all that different, because I play very competitive aau ball all through the spring and summer. 2. What are your goals for this season individually and as a team? I'm going to do everything I can to help the team win. Personal stats don't really matter to me, I just want our team to be successful. 3. What are your long term goals in high school basketball? I would like to win a state championship and continue to grow as a player every year. 4. How did you feel your spring and summer season went for club ball? This last aau season with Sagebrush was very positive [and] we all got better playing at such a high level. I used to play for Xpress which is also a great program 5. Which part of your game are you working on most right now? Right now I'm working on improving my pull up jumper. 6. Who do you look up to when it comes to basketball? My favorite players are Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Katie Lou Samuelson (I actually named my dog after her). I also really admired how much passion my sister played with and how hard she worked. WF West Schedule: http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/wf-west-bearcats-(chehalis,wa)/girls-basketball/home.htm
