2020-2021 Class 1A Honors

Now that the season is complete, I wanted to circle back and offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 1A performed throughout the 2020-2021 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshmen (2024) class, I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award just for them, so you won’t see them in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 1A.   MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="35057" first="Isabella" last="Reed"], 2021, 5-9 CF, Greenwood Christian Academy For the second consecutive season, I have chosen Isabella to win this award, and I think this time around it was an obvious choice. She is a stat-sheet stuffer, she can shoot, score, post, attack, rebound, and defend. She has led her team to the Semi-State each of the last two years. She can post up inside against smaller defenders, she's excellent scoring it in the mid-post, plus she has enhanced her perimeter skillset significantly over the last 12-18 months. Isabella will attend Indiana Wesleyan University next season, and she should offer the Wildcats great versatility at the forward position. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="97268" first="Kaybree" last="Oxley"], 2022, 5-9 CF, Tecumseh H.S. When I consider ladies for the Most “Valuable” Player award, I try to think about which of the better teams would struggle the most if you removed one player from their roster. Kaybree does as much/more for her team as any of the top players in Class 1A. She is a talented athlete with a wiry strong frame and length. She has a solid handle and can run offense, create, or attack the basket and finish. She has some touch to near the 3-point line, plus she'll get inside and battle bigger players. I also like her energy and her versatility defensively. As she continues to stretch her range, she could be even scarier. MOST IMPROVED PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="130403" first="Olivia" last="Brooke"], 2021, 5-9 CF, Pioneer H.S. Olivia has made statistical jumps each season throughout her career, but the jump she made from her Junior to Senior year, you often don't see. Add to that the fact that I felt like this season she affected the game more on her own, instead of playing off of others so much. She created a lot more (3.6 apg) than she acted as the receiver. Olivia also shot it 7% better from the field and 13% better from the free throw line than a year ago. She is a long, wiry strong, and versatile athlete. She has always played with a nice motor, but this year her rebounds were up, and she posted 11 double-doubles, compared to seven total over her first three seasons combined. COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="35050" first="Kylee" last="Shelton"], 2021, 5-10 SF, Bloomfield H.S. Kylee played in 10 games during the 2019-2020 season, averaging 21.4 points per game. She injured her knee in early December of 2019, following a 42-point outburst, and she missed the entire grassroots season as well. Returning to the court in November, less than a year removed from the injury, she ended up playing in 19 of the team's 20 games this season. She posted averages of 16.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 3.5 steals per game, despite not quite being 100% to begin the year. Kylee has always been a skillful forward with a natural feel for the game, plus she has really nice vision and a solid handle. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="177322" first="Kenzie" last="Fulks"], 2024, 5-6 PG, Bethesda Christian School Kenzie was the lone Class 1A Freshman we listed among our preseason all-state content, and it's because we had a hunch she would erupt this season and pick up where her 2020 sister Madi left off. Kenzie was outstanding, scoring 30 or more points six times, with a season-high of 41 points in a Sectional Semi-Final win. Her 26.0 point-per-game average placed her third amongst all scorers in Indiana, regardless of class, and her 597 total points have her well on her way to 2000 for her career. But she is also a playmaker and a willing passer, as she averaged 4.9 assists per game, to go along with 5.3 rebounds and 4.8 steals.
