For others it was a quick one day tournament to clean up some things before the prelims. For us coaches these one day tournaments can be nice because you usually play two back to back games and then you’re done. There’s no championship or third place games that go on. Most brackets only had four teams playing anyway, so if you won both you go away feeling confident.
11th grade division
The top two performers from this division come from the same team, Start Strong 11 Black. Liz Hiatt, the junior forward was very consistent in both games. She has a nice size body that allowed her to get her position and finish with ease. Kimori Morris, the combo guard, also had two good games on Saturday. She was at the top of the press and her speed and aggressiveness was to much for the other teams. Morris got a lot of her points from steals and fast breaks. These two girls play on the same high school team so I see where they get their grit. Start Strong 11 Black held the top 5 scoring leaders this weekend including Alyah Abrahamson who had 29 in the first game and Danielle Davis who had 19 in the first game.
10th grade division
The top performer from this division was impressive. Kayla Estling, the sophomore guard from Minnesota Hustle Kaylee 10, caught my eye right away. She is the type of player that can really play any position. Most of the kids on her team are the same height and I saw Kayla playing both post and point guard through out the game. Her teammates look for her to make decisions and to dish the ball out. She can score in many ways whether it be attacking the hoop strong or stepping outside of the three and knocking it down. Estling scored 23 points in her first game, totaling in 34 points across the two games.
