Figured I’d let the dust settle for a few days after watching a great batch of 2025s make a name for themselves in the AAU State Tournament over the weekend. There were quite a few young ladies that left a lasting impression and will become household names in the very near future.
Mya Maul- Minnesota Stars Voyce
Mya is as tough as they come and she just keeps coming. She struggled finishing a bit early on against North Tartan Smart, but as the game went on you could see that Maul has big-game ability. She’s relentless going to the basket off the dribble and possesses some of the best footwork in the paint that rivals any post in her class. Defensively she’s a lock-down defender and rebounds her position with the best of them. She averaged a shade over 10 ppg in the tournament but her impact was felt all over the court.
Kailey Korba- Minnesota Heat Hinck
This shifty lefty gets it done all over the court. Initially when I saw her play in her team’s first game against Southern Minnesota Fury, she was beating the defense down the court in transition for easy baskets. As the game went on Kailey defended her position well and grabbed a few strong rebounds; no jump balls happening here. Just when I thought I’d seen enough, she receives a pass in transition and hits her defender with hard, nasty eurostep and finishes with a nice scoop layup. She chipped in 13 points against the Fury and would go on to average 8.5 for the tournament. With the talented group that she plays with, that’s a pretty nice contribution. I was really impressed with the level of intensity Korba plays with and how well she communicates with her teammates on the court.
Bella Hanna- Crossfire Tusler
The tallest of the Hanna trio didn’t light up the scorebook, but she does a little bit of everything well. What really impressed me is her composure under duress. They played the Minnesota Heat in the quarterfinals and the game was physical from the onset. Hanna held her own and played great on-ball defense, rebounded and made whatever play was called for at the time. Her interior passing ability is second-to-none. She places the ball right where it needs to be for her teammates to just go up and finish. She has a great handle and broke the Heat defense down from the perimeter several times to get to the basket.
Aneisha Scott- The City Black
This kid is fearless, and is just flat out fun to watch. She stands about 5’1 with a very slight build. Against the Stars Borowicz squad, she probably had two of her first three shots in the lane blocked. You would think by that point a player would think twice about venturing into the forest amongst the trees again. She thought about it and decided to keep putting pressure on the defense and it eventually paid off. She drew foul after foul on the Stars frontline and earned a few trips to the charity stripe. Now with the defense sagging off to protect against the drive, she took advantage and knocked down 4 threes on her way to 15 points against the Stars. The game ended up getting away from The City, but Scott kept them in it as much as she could. Scott’s numbers for the tournament weren’t gaudy, but her presence alone creates opportunities for her teammates to flourish.
Brandi Washington- Metro Stars
I mentioned in an earlier article that in order for the Metro Stars to be competitive in the State Tournament that they needed their three-headed monster to answer the call. I can say Brandi heeded the call and stepped up. The combo guard had it clicking from all three levels and led her squad in scoring, pouring in 15.3 ppg for the tournament. Along with breaking the defense down and getting to the basket, she also knocked down 4 threes while leading her team to a 2-1 record. I think this run may have been what she needed to get that pep back in her step. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store!
