Alani Encinas 5’7 G Tucson Rattlers Black/Buena 2021
Alani has some of the best handles of the event. She keeps the ball on a string and uses a very quick and deceptive behind the back dribble to elude defenders. She is very good at attack and kicking it to open teammates, really impressing me with her court vision. Some of her passes are hot too! She likes to throw those one handed bullet passes.
Anna Ostlie 5’8 G AZ Elite/Chaparral 2020
Ostlie may have been the biggest surprise of the event. After her games, she left the crowd wondering.” Who’s that girl?”. She played terrific, even when she was matched up against other highly ranked guards, she performed. She is able to get past her defender with relative ease due to her tight handles and once she attacks middle it’s over. She is going to dump it off to one of her teammates.
Kamryn Doty 5’6 G AZ Supreme/Sabino 2021
Doty and Ostlie matched up in the semifinals of the 17U Gold bracket. It was very fun to watch. Doty and Ostlie kept trading big play after big play. I think the thing that is so impressive about Doty is her poise. She never looks rattled or afraid, she always makes the right play. She looks like a veteran point guard and she’s only a sophomore. She is only going to get better and better. She has a few highlight dimes to her teammates that kept them in those tough games.
Jaya Nelson 5’8 F AZ Supreme/Salpointe 2021
Jaya Nelson didn’t have the best performance in day 2 of the Main Event. I’ve seen her play much better before but she was still making big plays when her team needed them. Every time AZ Supreme was in a tough spot and needed a big play, Nelson delivered. If they needed a stop, she got it. If they needed a rebound, she got it. If they needed a 3, she got it. She really stepped up in the big moments for her team despite fatigue.
