Another round of postseason selections!
This addition brings me to Broward County. The 954 had a great showing in Lakeland. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas won the Class 6A state title with a 59-45 victory over Wekiva. The Raiders also won the 6A state championship over Wekiva in 2020-2021. Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy won its first state championship since 1991 with a victory over Cardinal Mooney. 5A Plantation American Heritage won its fifth consecutive state championship with a win over Bishop Moore. 4A Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian Academy reached the state final before falling to Lake Highland Prep 75-57.
That’s a pretty good showing for one area.
Let’s look into my selections...
MVP: [player_tooltip player_id="118146" first="Ta’Niya" last="Latson"] - American Heritage
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="118146" first="Ta’Niya" last="Latson"] was simply dominant in her lone season with American Heritage. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 27.2 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, 5.3 steals and two blocks per game while shooting 46 percent from the field. Latson scored 31 points in the state semifinals and 24 points in the final. She was named Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year. Latson is headed to Tallahassee in the fall to play for Florida State.
[player_tooltip player_id="243895" first="Lena" last="Girardi"] - Westminster Academy
2025 [player_tooltip player_id="243895" first="Lena" last="Girardi"] helped Westminster Academy to its first state championship in over 30 years. The 6-foot guard/forward averaged 20.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals while shooting 49 percent from the field. Girardi scored in double-figures in every game and 20 or more points in 15 contests. She scored a season-high 36 points against Miami Christian while adding four 3-pointers. She grabbed a season-high 14 boards against Somerset Academy Silver Palms. Girardi is well on her way to becoming one of the area's best players.
[player_tooltip player_id="91641" first="Karina" last="Gordon"] - St. Thomas Aquinas
You can pick a bunch of different players on St. Thomas Aquinas and be right. 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91641" first="Karina" last="Gordon"] averaged a team-best 13.8 points and three boards per game. She is a four-time state champion. Gordon has played at a high level and is a winner.
[player_tooltip player_id="91566" first="Joey" last="Delancy"] - American Heritage
Its hard to look past the Patriots’ five consecutive state titles. Therefore, 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91566" first="Joey" last="Delancy"] is deserving. The 5-foot-10 prospect averaged 16.1 points, seven rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. Delancy is a tough player that can play multiple positions.
[player_tooltip player_id="154841" first="Jada" last="Green"] - St. Thomas Aquinas
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="154841" first="Jada" last="Green"] is one of the more athletic players I saw this season. The 6-foot forward averaged 8.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game this season. Statistics aside, Green’s scoring versatility and athleticism on defense stood out on the floor. She is headed to the University of Richmond.
