Franklin-Simpson looks like the heavy favorite in the 4th region but Varney and her Barren County team are definitely capable of getting to Rupp Arena. Abigail is a talented guard who is one of the toughest guards to stop in the 4th and is a dynamic guard who gets to the rim consistently.

Barren County was very undersized in their 1st game of the tournament, playing one of the longest teams in the state, so the way they continued fighting until the end was impressive. Varney was definitely the bright spot for the Trojanettes and she really kept them in the game in the 1st half that I got to watch. She was scoring in a variety of ways, making good passes, really working hard to get open, and crashing the boards hard.

Varney is the pre-season frontrunner for 4th Region Player of the Year and she’s proving why in the start of this season. Her team is off to a 3-0 start and she averaged 25.5 PPG & 8 RPG through the 1st 2 games (haven’t seen the stats yet from their 72-8 win last night). Varney absolutely stuffed the stat sheet versus Etown with 30 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Varney is a crafty 3-level scorer, but she obviously brings much more than scoring to the court. If any college coaches are reading this, I highly recommend you take a look at her highlights from last season (linked here) and try to catch her in action this season.

Unfortunately, I did not get to watch Varney play in person this past season, but she is another player I continuously heard good things about all season long. Her ability to score at all 3 levels makes her very tough to guard and she is a strong defender. She also has a lot of quick moves that make it hard on the defense to stay in front.

Speaking of players who led their team in nearly every statistical category, Varney makes a big move from 115th to 39th overall with this update. Abigail is one of the best guards in the loaded 4th region and has shown the ability to score the ball at all three levels while impacting the game on both ends.
