We had a handful of highly-rated teams going at it and the stage was not too bright for these budding underclassmen. Here are a few of the best from the day.
Jessica Ajayi
Jessica Ajayi
Ajayi was easily one of the most impactful players at the showcase and made things go for the Conquerors who took the floor without their usual leader and all-league player, Jersey Huerta. Ajayi was all over the court, racing up and down and constantly finding herself at the rim. She showed off an awesome crossover and initiated lots of action getting into the paint and scoring or dishing. She controlled the pace, had great speed and patience, and was decisive reacting to plays which also led to countless rebounds for the point guard.
Wilkerson is a long wing that didn’t necessarily fill the stat sheet, but showed a lot of promise with the way she moved out on the court and played largely mistake free basketball. Her combo of size and quickness helped her play solid defense on the perimeter and really smother offensive players at times. As she gets more comfortable out there, Wilkerson could be a nice two-way player for Woodinville.
Kieara Curtis
Kieara Curtis
There were so many players on Bellarmine that caught my eye at the showcase and Curtis was one of the scrappier ones. She was aggressive with the ball in her hands and had a nice handle on display which led to some downhill playmaking. Her tenacity out there really showed, and she was able to hit some of the toughest shots I saw go down all day.
Hailey Quiggle
Hailey Quiggle
Quiggle played a couple of different key roles for the Falcons, stretching the floor and playing fearless basketball. She had one of the more reliable shots from deep and matched that with steady defense on the other end. What really stood out with Quiggle’s game was her willingness to stick her nose in the mix and fight for loose ball and extra possessions. It’s plays of that nature that helped Woodinville edge out Sumner in a rematch of last year’s 4A Final.
Stella Wiggins
Stella Wiggins
Wiggins had a tough game, getting in early foul trouble and having some borderline calls go against her. However, in her short time on the floor it was apparent she has major potential. She’s got good size and looks strong as hell out there. More importantly, she often found herself in great spots on the floor, ready to make plays from the middle. Although she didn’t get a ton of run at the showcase, she’s definitely a player to check back on down the road.
Madison Hughes
Madison Hughes
Hughes flashed a lot of potential as a showrunner and scoring threat. She was hitting pocket passes to cutters, using nice bounce passes in the lane, and hit a deep 3-pointer that really opened my eyes. She was confident, had a tight handle and exhibited all the characteristics of a true point guard in the making. She could be a big factor in years to come.
Collins is another player that should prosper in the Sumner backcourt. She was aggressive looking for her shot, showed some shiftiness pulling the ball back and then blowing by her defender, and was able to hit all the way out to the arc. She understands how to create space with her dribble, was confident with the ball, and hit some tough shots along the way.
