Lauren Ware positioning in the paintSunday;s second game with Boo Williams EYBL brought a different result, as penetrating guard play together with deadly perimeter shooting by BW exposed defensive holes. Their overall quickness controlled play in the second half as NT’s stars were gassed and not defending at the usual energy levels.
Monday, NT EYBL 17u tackles Team Takeover from Washington DC, before flying to Tuesday’s start of the Nike Tournament Of Champions in Chicago. Seven consecutive days with high intensity competition forced by NCAA rules. Coaches are allowed only specific observation dates; all the power five conference and many more watched from baseline seating.
NT EYBL 16u started with a two-point loss, then won three straight, with increasng margins, to reach GOLD championship game Monday, versus the Missouri Phenom EYBL.
Coach Ruth Sinn spent June assisting with the FIBA 16u team that won in it all in Chile. Sinn may have been alarmed at team chemistry and focus upon her return. The team responded well, and began with defensive pressure to force turnover and scoring. Three point shooting has not been as splendid as normal but quick cuts with sharp passing worked often and well.
Haleigh Timmer poised to pounceSaturday games were both only two point margins, one loss and one win. Sunday, first quarter surges sprung the 16u’s out in front. Haleigh Timmer hit ten in quarter one against Team Takeover.
Game two had CJ Adamson and Adalia McKenzie driving into double digits early. Cassidy Carson started splashing trey’s. Mara Braun, Jenna Johnson, and Jordyn Lamker went BEAST mode with steals, boards, and snaring 50-50 balls. Kendel Cox is a lock down defender, disruptive with length, footwork, and positioning.
The development of Sophie Haydon continues to amaze, borne of native athleticism, grit, and responding to coaching. Maya Nnaji’s post growth is equally impressive; her short range jumper is downy-soft. Quick spinners earned buckets, and oh-ah’s.
NT Sinn also travels to Chicago for Nike’s Championship; gonna be fun !!
