One of those showcases was the annual Y.C. Winborn Showcases. The three-day annual event hosted by Rock Hill HS saw a number of teams converge on the home of the 5A Bearcats for several days of exciting basketball. One of the teams that was on hand was even in town from Australia.
We at Prep Girls Hoops were also there for the final day of this year’s event. We unveiled our top 10 performers, but we need five more to get to 15. These five certainly showed themselves to be worthy of the recognition.
Indian Land concluded the Winborn Showcase in emphatic fashion with a dominant victory to dispatch of 1A Great Falls. Young was the primary player in the 4A Warriors offensive onslaught as she placed 14 points on the board en route to the dominant win. Young also greatly bolsters a team’s rebounding efforts with the work she contributes on the glass. Her willingness to draw contact and find her way to the free throw line is another strong area of her overall game. Young’s Warriors concluded this year’s Winborn Showcase going 2-1 following the win over Great Falls plus a win over 3A Gilbert but a loss to 4A Airport.
When the 5A Vikings of Spartanburg appear on the schedule, one of the first things that runs through the mind of players and a coaching staff is how to stop the team’s star veteran big. Young tallied 12 points to lead the Vikings against a tough Fort Mill team that is already in double-digits for victories. She plays on many occasions with her back to the basket and is ready to get to work when she has the ball in her hand. If she misses a close attempt, she is likely to haul in an offensive rebound and will draw contact to get to the free throw line. Even though it was a tough weekend for Spartanburg with defeats to Blythewood, A.C. Flora and Fort Mill, Young showed why she was a preseason SCBCA Top 5 5A senior selection.

Caitlin Toll
Caitlin Toll
Toll’s Ivanhoe Australia Knights team is beginning its IKBC Girls USA Tour. The first stop on that tour happened to be the Charlotte, USA area – Rock Hill specifically. Her team played in three matchups at the Y.C. Winborn Showcase – all against teams from the state of South Carolina. Toll closed her team’s time at the Winborn Showcase with an 11-point performance in a valiant effort against a tough Blythewood team. Toll stays active even when the ball is not in her hands, displays impressive ball handling skills and can score from all three levels. The other two teams the Knights played were A.C. Flora and host school Rock Hill.

The 2023-24 campaign has seen an improved Bethune-Bowman showing from last season’s rendition. That was evident this past weekend at the Winborn Showcase. Pelzer finished with 10 points to lead her 1A Mohawks to an effort-filled showing against 4A York – the same team that Bethune-Bowman lost to by more than 20 at last season’s get-together at Rock Hill HS. Pelzer had two of the team’s successful attempts from downtown. She is a two-sport athlete whose sports plate also includes playing volleyball at Bethune-Bowman. The Mohawks’ 1-1 mark at the Winborn is an improvement over last year’s and they are only one win shy of matching their total win mark of seven from 2022-23.

Even though the Green Wave’s time at this year’s Winborn Showcase concluded on a low note via a loss to Marvin Ridge, Easley still put together a solid weekend at Rock Hill HS. Proctor finished the game with the Mavericks with 10 points to key her team’s efforts against a tough Marvin Ridge squad. Proctor will find a lane to the rim and understands when to score and when to pass. She fuses together ball handling capabilities with quickness. Easley’s weekend included wins over Hunter Huss and River Bluff. Proctor played her first season at the varsity level in 2022-23 when she was an eighth grader.
