This past weekend, Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA played host to West Coast Elite’s Girls High Academic Super Bowl. There was a lot of talent in the building from the Class of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and even some from 2024.
The event ran from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. I was able to attend the event on Saturday, and here’s a look at some of the top players from the Class of 2020 that I saw.
1. Camryn Kiernan – Mater Dei
Kiernan was one of the top all-around players at the event. She can do a little bit of everything on the court. Offensively, she can run the floor well on the break and finish at the rim. She’s a good three point shooter as well. On the other end of the floor, she plays solid on ball defense. She’s a good rebounder who can start the fast break when crashing the boards. A great hustle player who isn’t afraid to dive on the floor.
2. Merci Turner – Arcadia
Turner is a great rebounder. She positions herself well to be able to crash the glass after a missed shot. She’s solid at crashing the offensive glass and gaining second shot opportunities for her team. A lot of her points come off of put-backs from offensive rebounds. She finishes well at the rim when she gets a look. Seems to be always in the right place in the paint.
3. Akilah Watson – Legacy
Watson is an aggressive player with good instincts on the defensive end of the court. She is particularly adept at playing on ball defense, she makes it very difficult for the offensive player to move around the court. She’s also good at being able to read the passing lanes and pick off errant passes. She’s a good ball-handler and she finds teammates for easy buckets. Can finish around defenders at the rim.
4. Jordan Kruljac – Bishop Gorman
Kruljac is a solid point guard. She excels as the team’s primary ball-handler and playmaker. On the fast break, she’s constantly looking for, and finding her teammates for easy looks. When she looks for her own shot, she can attack the rim, get into the lane, and draw contact to get herself to the free-throw line. She’s also a decent three-point shooter.
5. Mia Dufresne – Narbonne
Dufresne has the makings of being a real post anchor. She uses her body well in the post whether it’s establishing position to score or boxing out for a rebound. When she does establish post position, she is decisive with the basketball. She makes her move quick without allowing the defender enough time to react. She’s a good offensive rebounder too. On defense, she acts as an interior shot blocker who alters plenty of opponent drives.
