On February 7th, the Cesar Chavez Champions traveled to Surprise to take on the Monsoon of Valley Vista. The winner would be crowned the champion of the 6A West Valley region. The first half was a close low scoring matchup as Valley held a 1-point lead at the midway point. Going into the fourth quarter, Valley maintained that same 1-point lead, 38-37. Cesar Chavez seemed to be headed for the win in the fourth quarter, but a Valley Vista 3-point play tied it with 23 seconds left in the game. The game went into overtime, where the Monsoon pulled away, winning 66-59.

In this article, I take a look at the standouts in this contest:

[player_tooltip player_id='602888' first='Jada' last='Wilson'] Valley Vista

Wilson was the difference in the game as she was all over the place. She's athletic with an excellent motor. Jada gave her team multiple shot attempts on multiple possessions by crashing the boards. She finished with a monster double-double that included a game-high 18 rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id='530989' first='Tysyn' last='Johnson'] Valley Vista

Tysyn is a shifty guard who was hard to stay in front of. She displayed quickness and patience when the opening wasn't there to attack through. She constantly beat her man, forcing help defense and creating openings for her teammates.

[player_tooltip player_id='598347' first='Lakeisha' last='Robinson'] Cesar Chavez

Robinson is an active wing who did what she could to help her team win. She showed good athletic ability as she was very active on the boards. On offense, she is fast in the open court and displayed a very nice mid-range game.

[player_tooltip player_id='205640' first='Jocelyn' last='Michelle Chavez'] Valley Vista

One of the senior leaders, Chavez, got into quick foul trouble and had to sit most of the first half. In the fourth quarter, her leadership skills took over. She capped a late-game comeback with a 3-point play near the end of regulation. She impacted the outcome of the game even in limited minutes.

[player_tooltip player_id='513103' first='Victoria' last='Ballard'] Cesar Chavez

Ballard is an experienced guard who plays at a nice pace. Her shooting range extends out past the three-point line, as shown by her hot shooting for the Champions. She also showed a nice mid-range game and various ways to create shots. On defense, she played solid.

[player_tooltip player_id='586382' first='Emma' last='Dasovich'] Valley Vista

Emma played a very good overall game. On offense, she was often double-teamed but showed poise in knowing how to attack it. She passed very well out of the double team, creating open looks for her teammates. She also showed the ability to step out and shoot the three-ball. She rebounded very well and got the ball out quickly to the ball handlers.
