Continue ReadingA is for Ayoka “Yokie” Lee, Byron’s 6-5½ junior post, who has committed to Kansas State. She also recently became Byron’s all-time leading scorer with more than 1,300 points. She will join Rachel Ranke, who is a year older, and classmate Christianna Carr at Kansas State. She is rated as a 3-star recruit and is among the top scorers in the state of Minnesota at around 30 ppg. You may have noticed that she has moved up from #3 to #2 in our latest ranking of the class of 2018 in Minnesota.
E is for Emma Grothaus of Mahtomedi, a junior and Lehigh recruit, scored her 1,000th point in a win vs. North St. Paul the other night.
I, unfortunately, is for Injuries. Ellie Gess and Paige Domyahn were MIA at yesterday's Fury MLK Classic at St. Kate's. I also learned yesterday that Carmen Backes of Chisago is hurt. I had noticed that she was missing in the most recent Chisago box scores, but now I hear that she is indeed hurt. And Brett also confirmed today that Zumbrota-Mazeppa post Lauren Miller, is probably out for the year with an ACL. Maizie Deihl of New Prague has also missed at least one or maybe more recent games for New Prague.
K is for Kristin Scott, Kasson-Mantorville senior post, of course, and Iowa State recruit. Not the worst thing about Monday’s cancellation of the KoMets vs. Waseca game at the Fury MLK Classic at St. Kate’s, but adding to the disappointment was the fact that it might have been the game in which she would score her 2,000th point. It turns out she has 1,974 career points and needs 26 to get to 2,000. So, it now turns out that she is not unlikely to hit #2,000 at home vs. Zumbrota-Mazeppa tonight (Tuesday January 17). Or, if not, then surely at Cannon Falls on Friday night. Either way, I’m not gonna see it now. Still, the worst thing about the cancellation of the KoMets vs. Waseca last night was just not getting to see Kristin Scott play basketball, 2,000 points or not.
O is for Orono and also for Oops, and there's an O in Loder, as in Maddie Loder, Orono junior point guard, whom Brett just informed me is not included in our revised 2018 rankings. Clearly, this is a mistake. I had intended that she would be in there. I had thought that she was in there. So she is being added to the rankings as we speak here. And, just in case you find it hard to find “Maddie Loder” among a list of almost 200 names, here's a hint. She is at #25.
S is for Stewartville, home of 8th grade sensation Erin Lamb, a 6-1 post who is scoring in double figures per game. And S is for “shoot, I wish I hadn't said that.” I complained the other day in “print” that I hadn’t been able to ascertain Lamb's numbers at that time as Stewartville doesn’t have its stats up on the Hub. Stewartville coach Ryan Liffrig wasn’t too excited about being singled out, and he had a right, so let me say it again: “Oops” and “Shoot,” and to apologize to coach Liffrig for that.
The fact is there’s about 100 schools that don’t have their numbers on the Hub anymore which seriously complicates my job of trying to track what’s going on out there in the world. He suggested I could email any time, and thank you for that. But there are 412 schools, so emailing everybody everytime I need some info in a timely fashion just isn’t practical. So if anybody wants to help me cover your team, please consider getting your stats, including player height and player year, up on the Hub. Thanks a lot.
T is for Twenty-Nineteen, as in the class of: Too many other girls have scored their 1,000th to mention. We’re picking on Grothaus who recently was primarily responsible for Mahtomedi being our Team of the Week, and was profiled as a result of her commit to Lehigh. But, anyway, 3 2019s joined the 1,000 point club and I thought they were worthy of special mention. They are:
• Destinee Oberg, Holy Angels, center and #1 rated among the 2019s
• Erika Bute, Alden-Conger, point guard, #37
• Tori Nelson, Henry Sibley, forward, #4
Z is for Sidney Zieske, also a junior and a Waconia wing, who has committed to Montana State. Sid can shoot the 3 with a nice, quick release, and has quick feet and good handles. She is scoring 11 ppg so far this year.
