All through her freshman season at Austin-East High School, she was making a defensive impact. One of her main weapons defensively is her shot blocking. McDermott does a good job navigating the movement of guards and, because of this, she finds herself in ideal spots on the floor to contest their shots if they make it to the paint. McDermott had multiple games with two or more blocks this past schol season. This includes a contest against Knoxville Catholic, where she had four blocks.

McDermott also has above-average vertical speed for her size. This allows her to make good close-outs, and also gives her the capability to jump passing lanes for steals at a high-level.
