of Omaha Central High School. Hughes competes as a 5’5 CG that moves around the floor into multiple spots. She can play the 1, 2, or 3 depending on what is needed at the high school level but in college, I think she will be more of a 1 or a 2. I’m feeling with her scoring ability and her ability to produce without the ball that she will be put at the 2 but it’s too early to tell. I’m sure that Hughes is just happen to be locked in and committed to playing ball for four more years. If she works on her weakness, she is going to be a really solid committee for the Yellow Jackets.

has been a hot commodity this past six months in the aspect of recruiting and getting looks to compete at the next level. Hughes is a guard that has a nice set up dribble, great body control, and a smart play-style. In most moments she knows how to work smart instead of hard, helping her taking advantage of her matchups in important situations. Hughes led Central last Winter in a few positive statistical categories and she is back for one last run at it for her Senior season. She has been working relentlessly this off-season so I expect her to pick up right where she left off.

Amiyja Hughes made the play of the day yesterday across the Midwest on the AAU scene. Hughes and her Nebraska Hoops Elite team came from behind and secured a win at the final buzzer off of a big steal and bucket by Hughes. There was very limited time left on the clock and NHE was pressing in the full court. There was an errant pass by the opponent, giving the ball to NHE and a chance for the win near the rim. Hughes came up clutch and made the most of that opportunity. I always say that a game doesn’t come down to one play but in this case, it was just the one play that happen to give them the victory in the end. Something that must of been fun to watch if you are apart of the Nebraska Hoops Elite Program.

Omaha Central had a hard time finding the bottom of the basket to start off this game due to no fault of their own. They were playing good basketball, getting open looks at the hoop, and being selfless teammates but the ball just would not go in. Someone for this team that did step up throughout the last three quarters of the game was

. Hughes is someone that has been able to step in and show out this season for the Eagles. She is another playmaker and solid competitor that this team and coaching staff can trust when things break down. In a game where the Eagles just couldn’t get shots to fall, which does happen, Hughes was their leading scorer. She displayed poise and composure when things didn’t work out and that showed through until the very end. Omaha Central is going to play several more important games this season and Hughes is going to be a big reason for their success moving forward.
