Taylor County returns a lot of their roster and Avery is going to be one of the better secondary scoring options in the 5th region this season. A big time shooter who made 42% of her threes last summer, Raikes is a big difference maker for the Cards and their hopes of making it back to Rupp Arena next March. As her game continues to expand, look for Avery and

A lengthy guard who did most of her damage on the defensive end of the floor in the matchup that I watched. From an offensive stabpopint she showed she can stretch the floor as well

showed up and showed out against Knott Central! She started strong with a rebound and put-back for Taylor County’s first points of the game, quickly getting her team on the board. Avery then hit a corner triple to keep the momentum going, and setting the tone early on offense, scoring the first 5 points for the Lady Cardinals. Avery continued to stay hot from deep, hitting another triple in the second quarter and got in the mix for a 50/50 ball in the third quarter. In the fourth, she hit yet another big three, sealing her spot as a standout performer and keeping the game out of reach. (Featured Image)

played in every game for Taylor County and averaged 3 points and 2 rebounds in her freshman season. Raikes is at her best when she attacks downhill; she can absorb contact and still finish at the rim. She can hit shots from long distance and knows how to make an impact on the defensive end. Raikes will be a key player for the Lady Cardinals this season.

Shifty guard skills were on display. Great quick release on her shot and can knock them down with good range. Strong shooting from. Also can get into the paint where she scored or distributed well. Showed a lot of toughness.

If I had to put a position label on Raikes right now I think I would have to go with Small Forward. She has some Guard skills, but she tends to score in lots of ways more like a Frontcourt player. She made one very nice drive from the top to penetrate the lane and score at the center of the rim. But a the same time she also scored on a post slide into the corner for an 8 foot jumper and that is very much a Forward type of move.
Whatever position she plays, she is a player. She is not shy about making contact with the body to position herself for rebounds. She hustles and plays good defense and has some versatility. It is not surprising to know she played on the State Champion Middle School team in Kentucky this past season or that she will likely matriculate onto a very good High School team next season in Taylor County.
