A player who continually caught my attention with her movement on both ends of the floor. She’s a knockdown shooter on the kick-out, consistently relocating and finding open space to make herself available.

Good off-ball movement cutting to the rim and the ability to find gaps in the defense for mid-range opportunities. A creative scorer off the dribble, displaying solid footwork and a nice touch with the running floater.

Defensively, she is very active jumping passing lanes for steals and getting her hands on deflections. Moves well laterally and does a good job keeping ball handlers in front.

Steven has quickly become one of the top two-way point guards in the state. She harasses ball handlers the length of the floor, jumps passing lanes and scores steals at a sprint and uses her strong handles and speed to beat back court double-teams. And with her head on a swivel she made plays and created her own shots, burying perimeter jumpers including with range. Steven and the Golden Eagles missed what seemed like a score of open layups and short jumpers. Improvement in that department and consistency in sealing the shot will be something I will be watching.

Brooke has a deceptively quick first step. Her first step going left might be a little faster than her right, but it’s something to take note of when game planning against her because she can get to the rim in 2-3 dribbles easily from the top of the key.

Steven showed herself to be a threat to score in a variety of situations but what I really liked was her footwork working around the hoop and her knocking down jumpers with elevation and quickness.

Steven set herself up for a big sophomore season by having a strong summer. A Greater Wichita Athletic League honorable mention selection as a freshman, she will be a big part of the Golden Eagles’ charge to another 5A state tournament. I love vocal point guards who direct traffic and she is that. A skilled, quick offensive player, Steven uses a strong head fake to get a step or three. Off the drive she finishes with athleticism and nails the quick pull up jumper. She is also a three ball threat. Where she has especially garned attention is with her defense. Often she is top dog on the court guarding the ball. She plays hard and does the little things a team needs to win. Watch further development working one-on-one against headier and quick defenders with some size in the half and full court. Strong with serious upside.
