About Evalyn

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I like to play fast for 95 feet, even though I'd say speed is not my best physical attribute. I'd say physical strength and conditioned-for-32 minutes are. On offense I feel I'm best when I can attack the hoop in a system that spreads the defense out. On defense we are primarily a 2-3 zone and I feel I can play any position in that defense. I'm 5'8 but feel I can play like I'm 5'11 or 6'0.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

My high school coach calls me a "silent leader" on the floor. I'm not really a vocal player but will lead through action, attitude and effort. I feel I'm at my best when I can thrive off of my "next play" mentality, especially on nights when shooting isn't there or I make some uncharacteristic mistakes. I feel like my teammates can feed off of that.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I'm involved in FFA, FBLA and Sources of Strength. I was part of a FFA State Championship AgriScience project which focused on farmer mental health, which I'm really proud of. I was also part of the Velva One-Act Play this fall, which was really out of my comfort zone and turned out to be an extremely rewarding experience. I'm a 4.0 student on the Honor Roll.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I really consider myself as a reserved person who took a bit to come out of my shell. Basketball has helped me with that. My coach has counted on me to be a leader right away my freshman year, not necessarily vocally but through my on-court attitude, effort and off-the-court preparation. With that, I feel I have built my leadership background and confidence to become more of a vocal leader.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

As a team, we haven't been very successful during the past 3 seasons. It has been a challenge to stay engaged as a team knowing we are probably going to be overmatched most nights. I feel like I've grown as a person and a leader because of it. My freshman year and at times my sophomore year, I probably tried to do too much and I think that hurt the team. Once I recognized that, I've grown.

What type of college are you looking for?

Any opportunity that will allow me to play 4 more years of competitive basketball while preparing for Med School. I have aspirations of becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon.
