#13 For Maize South Lady Mavericks. Jaela was the star of the night by dominating on the defensive end. She switched onto Eisenhower’s leading scorer in the 3rd Quarter and got two huge stops, which shut down any potential comeback attempt for Eisenhower. By then, her shot started falling after a slow start, and she hit 3 threes and 2 midrange jumpers to seal the deal for the Lady Mavericks. She was the game’s leading scorer and got to rest for most of the 4th Quarter.

Thompson had a big night. Her 26 points were just more than half of the Mavericks’ total. Yes there were plenty of cherry picking points that penalized the Buffaloes for not sending a couple players back on shots but her use of her size, hops, creativity scoring in the paint made her very difficult to stop inside.

MVP of the night against Maize (12/12/25). Jaela is a strong defender who helps guard all 5 positions on the court. She has good reflexes and a quick instinct in the passing lanes to create turnovers and lead fast breaks for easy buckets. She is athletic enough to cover an entire split-half of the court, and she is clearly aware of it, because she will give her opponents space at times just to let them make a mistake and try to pass to a nearby teammate, only to get it intercepted for a pick +2. Offensively, she seems to prefer getting to the cup for easy buckets, but does have range, and she will pull the trigger from anywhere if you leave her open.

Thompson has made first team all-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League and all state teams for the past two seasons. Two years ago at 4A McPherson then at 5A Maize South last season. The athletic, quick and lengthy guard is a pure thief on the floor. I have seen her combines instincts, quick hands with her length to generate 6-8 steals in a game several times. A fluid scorer in a variety of situations Thompson is adept at using her handles to split defenders to finish at speed. At minimum she holds an offer from University of Nebraska-Kearney. Thompson debuts at #10.

The transfer to Maize South was big factor on a short roster Bullpups team that finished third at the 4A state tournament. Not only did she pick up Ark City Chisholm Trail division III first team honors but also was named either second or third team all-state by KBCA, KSHSAACovered and Sports In Kansas.
