Katy led Bowling Green in almost every statistical category this season and managed to get them back to Rupp Arena in what was supposed to be a “rebuilding year”. Smiley moves from 39th to 31st in this update and could probably be higher. With a big AAU season, Smiley could work her way up the rankings and into multiple college offers.

Bowling Green came into the game slightly undersized in the post, but Smiley made it clear she wasn’t giving them anything easy down low from the start of the game. She had some big blocks and threw some excellent passes to get her teammates open looks. After going 0-for-3 from the field in the first half, Smiley knocked down some big shots in the second half and finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and a steal.

Smiley is a player whose stook is about to rise exponentially as more people in the state are able to get their eyes on her. She’s got great size and length to go along with her strength. She also has excellent shooting form. She was one of the best shooters at the event with the ability to knock down shots from anywhere on the floor, but what really impressed me was her recognition of mismatches. Every time she saw a player that she could post up and/or score on at the rim, she would put herself in great positions to do just that. She finished some tough baskets in the process as well. Very high ceiling.

Predominantly a three point shooter on the offensive end, Katy shot a very respectable 35% for her season and helped get the Lady Purples to another regional title. Moving forward, Smiley is going to be a much bigger piece for Bowling Green next season as they are graduating a ton of talent this season. Look for her to become a more diverse scorer moving forward.

Bowling Green is deep and talented and are the heavy favorites to win the 4th region heading into postseason. A big shooting guard, Katy can add a different dimension to their offense if she can get hot from three. She’s primarily been shooting threes all season and if she can improve her percentage over the next month, the Lady Purples are going to be on the short list to win it all at Rupp.
