Expert Analysis

Layne is one of the few pure point guards in this class, and though injuries took a year from her, you don’t seem to notice at all. She has a motor and aggression about her that seems to push those around her, and from a skillset standpoint she can do what needs to be done, or whatever the possession calls out of her.

LZ guard play is some of the best in the state, and you can contribute a lot of that success to Nordstrom. She’s tough on the drive, makes solid decisions on the move, and can play with and without the ball. Hell of a worker as well.

17U Black. Nordstrom is everything you want out of a PG. She competes hard, has a high motor, she communicates great, she is extremely crafty, and she is thorough. This is someone that you can give the ball to as a coach and she can go to work as a producer in a number of different ways. This weekend she was her team’s #1 PG by creating off the dribble and finding her open teammates in some games. In others she was getting to the spots she is most comfortable with and finishing the take herself. It was really whatever she wanted to do. Nordstrom has a nice showing the past few days. Now it’s time to lock back into high school ball.

Being a key guard for a possible state tournament team is no joke, and even though Nordstrom has had a couple hiccups when it comes to staying healthy, she has been nothing but an impact player for this Zurich program. She is a true point guard who knows how to be dominant and play a role.

Layne’s facilitation and hustle was unmatched today. Her motor just does not quit. She doesn’t even seem to get tired. She has a motor that doesn’t stop and makes great decisions on the fly. Tight handles and excellent passing. Great court IQ. Will be a key to the success of the Lake Zurich team this year.

Layne has had multiple instances over the past couple weeks of showing how strong of a guard she is. Her game can fit into multiple systems, and her skillset will find a way to thrive. Here game has a poised aura to it, she never seems rushed to make a decision. She can apply pressure from both ends of the court, as well as “blend in” and make plays without the ball.

She can come down the floor and control the pace of play within in a contest, she can attack her defender and get to whatever spot she wants on the offensive end, and she communicates well with everyone around her. If a defender tries to pressure her, she is also very good at controlling her emotions and keeping everything around her in check. When you add all of this together, you get someone that any coach would love to have as their PG and she did a great job of having that on full display throughout this entire event.

Nordstrom will be a one of many main factors on this year’s Lake Zurich team. The roster is compiled of a good group of talent and tremendous size at multiple positions, but the intriguing thing about Layne will be her utilizing her skillset in PNR situations. The college level is keen on playing out of those actions, and I think she’s in a perfect situation to show her IQ and play making ability as well as her scoring.

Like many of the players mentioned, Layne didn’t see ample playing time this high school season. What she did do was sharpen her skills. Playing and practicing with a stacked Lake Zurich team has improved her game. My counterparts already praised her skills at the camp and there were plenty. She is an all-around phenomenal point guard who is going to impress on her circuit and with her high school program.

Strong passer and looks to feed post often. Unselfish but can create scoring opportunities. Protects the ball extremely well. Moves without the ball with purpose, very little standing around. Runs offense and recognizes mismatches. She’s another end to end player showing defensive intensity.
