Expert Analysis
Mindy McCarthy | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
MacKenzie Ortscheid is officially in the record books for Northwest Cabarrus becoming the all time leading scorer, and she certainly isn’t finished yet. She knows exactly how to go to work off the pass flashing in the paint, grabbing the ball, and making her adjustment to get the right position for two points. She doesn’t just score inside the perimeter as her shot from deep is on point. She does a little bit of everything for her team getting inside for rebounds and using her length to cause disruptions on defense.

is yet again making herself a double-double machine. She’s tough on the boards on both ends of the court, and she goes to work right off these boards whether it’s pushing it up the court or making her points off the offensive glass. Her jab step has been lethal getting her shot up off the dribble with an open look even from around the perimeter. Her post moves are sure to create space with her quick footwork and strength to get into position.

battles on the block for every possession and rebound. She gets inside using her own power dribbles, or she flashes in the paint looking for the pass from the wing. She’s tough on defense, too, and she is constantly talking to her teammates making sure everyone is on the same page.

She is the primary player opponents have to look to contain if hoping to earn a victory over Northwest Cabarrus and is primed for success at the next level. Ortscheid was recently offered from Goldey-Beacom in Delaware as well as in-state school Lees-McRae. This was in addition to offers she already had from Mars Hill, Barton College and Davis & Elkins. Ortscheid’s Trojans concluded last season with a solid 20-6 record and is making the move from 3A to 5A. Ortscheid posted career numbers last season – in the 26 games she played with Northwest Cabarrus in 2024-25, she averaged 17.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.3 steals a contest. has been an asset on the court for both of her teams for years as she knows exactly how to step into the right role based on the personnel on the court. She’s been dominant on the block being able to grab boards and use her footwork to score some points. Another multi-sport forward who has experience in volleyball in addition to hoops. Last season at 3A Northwest Cabarrus she averaged 11.7 points, six rebounds and 2.9 steals a game in the 27 contests she played for the Trojans. She led Northwest Cabarrus to a 20-7 record and a 13-3 mark in its South Piedmont Conference. After spending a bit of time wearing the 1 of 1 Prep uniform, Ortscheid will indeed return to the Trojans for 2024-25. The highly talented 5-foot-11 Lady Attack Elite standout landed an offer from Davis & Elkins at the beginning of the calendar year and has since added one from Barton College as of August.

Another product of Lady Attack Elite , Ortscheid has a very full athletic plate throughout the year. In addition to basketball, she has also played volleyball during her time at Northwest. During the season, Ortscheid landed an offer from Davis & Elkins in West Virginia and recently landed another offer from Barton College. Expect those offers to continue to pour in over the next couple of years for this talented junior.

Mackenzie Ortscheid had a phenomenal season with Northwest Cabarrus putting in work all over the court. She has a finesse with the ball on the block being able to score some points off her moves, and she can use her ball handling to make some plays further from the basket. She definitely shouldn’t be left open around the perimeter as she can knock down that shot, too. Her IQ is apparent on defense knowing how to prevent her opponents from getting easy paths to the basket.

Mackenzie continues to be such a high level player for the Lady Trojans. As a coach, she is the player you will always find minutes for because you will never see her take wild shots, throw bad passes, or turn the ball over. She takes good care of the basketball, knows where the ball needs to go and will help facilitate the offense. Mackenzie hit some big 3’s Friday night, all within the flow of the offense. She rebounds well and can defend the perimeter or the paint. I’m very excited to see her continued development as her stock is sure to continue to rise over the next couple of years.
