Messer is a premiere talent in the Midwest. She earned a lot of attention this offseason with stellar AAU play and had nearly every NSIC school after her. She decided on committing to Southwest Minnesota State University, a school that recently won the National Division 2 championship just a few years ago. She is an elite athlete and elevates really well in the lane for tough to defend mid-range jump shots. Her athletic ability will transfer smoothly and she will have the chance to be a very good defender at the next level.
The long-limbed off-guard has had a terrific summer season and has gotten regional colleges excited about her potential. Many NSIC schools have tremendous interest in Mataya and for good reason. Mataya probably has Division 1 length and athleticism, but will need to improve her shooting in order to get to that level. She would fit in great in the Northern Sun or have a chance to player higher after a year or two at the junior college level. Mataya is lined up for an excellent senior season.
Mataya might be the best athlete I saw today in the gym. Her jumping ability is incredible and she does a really good job of changing speed and direction. She is gaining a ton of interest from Division 2 schools and rightfully so. She could have potential at the Division 1 level if she shot the ball a little bit better. Considering a Junior College for a year or two might be a good option for Mataya if she has interest at playing at the Division 1 level.
Mataya is making some noise this spring and will no longer be a secret in the recruiting world. She is a tall and lanky 5’11 who is an outstanding defender. She moves her feet well laterally and has exceptional timing with her shot blocking. She jumps well and rebounds well. She is skilled enough to grab defensive rebounds and run in transition. She is a great offensive threat. Look for the offers to start coming in.
Mataya is a long and athletic forward. She moves well and times her blocks without fouling. She is able to rebound and push the ball forward in transition herself. Her length is what is most impressive; her arms create havoc defensively. She had several nice offensive moves, including many tough pull up jump shots in the lane and a sweet drop off pass on a drive. One D2 coach told me “I have got to have her.”
Mataya is an incredible player who plays with a visible toughness. She is a solid 5’11 and a very good jumper. She times her rebounding so well and is able to get the ball at the peak of her jump. She is like a bulldozer going to the basket, not caring who is in the way and she is able to finish very efficiently through contact. She is currently averaging 20 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. She has St. Mary’s in every game and will have her team very competitive come tournament time.
