Portia Polo
About Portia
Expert Analysis
Devin Record | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Portia has really been playing at a high level despite opposing teams always focusing on her and sometimes double/triple teaming her. She still fills up the stat sheet, still finding her spots and crashing the boards hard every possession. She is a team first player, making sure her teammates are involved. She recently dropped 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in a close loss to West Valley.

Portia has been a top player in her class for the last couple seasons, showing she can play at an elite level over the last couple seasons too. She gets guarded tightly every game, sometimes double teamed so team can try to slow her down. It doesn’t necessarily slow her down as she is always able to stuff the stat sheet. She recently had 15 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals in a game where she also achieved the 1,000 point scored mark on her career.

Portia is going to face many tough matchups this season, with her likely being doubled almost every game. Newport couldn’t pull out the win against Eastlake but Portia still dominated the game. She ended up with 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the hard fought loss.

She does it all for her team and always does whatever it takes to win, that is just what type of player she is. She gets doubled often but fights through it to find open teammates or even break open to get her own bucket. She plays elite defense and can cause havoc, being able to defend any guard in the state. She will have a great college player too, being a team first player and always being unselfish.

Portia is going to be the top player for Newport and with some underclassman who have yet to show their game off at the varsity level, Polo should expect double teams often. She has been dealing with it already in fall league action but has played through the pressure in a big way. She can dribble through double teams and use her quickness to find her open teammates or get down-low in the paint to get the contact and get the bucket. She is a phenomenal game manager, being able to control the pace of the game well. 4 year coaches should have her on thier radars.

She’s a sparkplug who can run the show and score the rock, and is the unquestioned leader at Newport. She can score inside and out, and shows some toughness needed to lift up her teammates with her play. Newport loses fellow top-scorer

(17.3 ppg) to Eastlake, so Polo will have an even bigger responsibility on her plate entering her senior season. She has picked up numerous offers over the last year and is just one of two first-team All-KingCo players returning this winter.

Then: Portia was a bulldog at the point guard position. She was consistently attacking the basket. The quickness was a difference maker in the Top 250. She had good lateral quicks on D and picked pockets regularly. A standout true point guard in the making.
Now: You wanna know if a player works on their craft. She does. Her three point shot looks like a knock down great shooter. She has excellent handles and PG game sense. Noticeably better is her shooting. The mechanics are on point. A 1st team all King-Co pick, she is making waves. Check the video for work ethic.

Portia is headed to California for the Nike TOC, playing for FOH Stuckey. Polo has been playing non-stop all summer long, traveling across the world playing against high level competition. She’s been improving on the court steadily, handling the ball at an elite level and easily knocking down shots when defenders leave her open. She’s bound for a massive senior year next season and coaches from the D1/D2 levels should be watching.

Portia is a really poised leader for both Newport and Team Stuck, and what really stands out about Portia is the intensity and effort she brings on the defensive side of the ball. She takes pride in staying in front of whoever she’s guarding with quick feet and reactions. She also brings great vision to the court, looking to get her teammates involved. Be on the lookout for Portia to make a difference on the court in many games this next season.

Portia is one of my favorite players in the state to watch. She is so calm with the ball in her hand and is always prepared on what she’ll do next, staying ready for whatever comes her way. She is a great leader for Newport and Team Stuck, providing elite vision and defensive abilities. Another thing that stands out when you watch her is the pride she has on the defensive side of the ball. Polo moves her feet so well, always keeping ball handlers in front of her. She is an elite player who just keeps getting better and better, always working on the weak spots in her game. 4 year college coaches should have her on their radars.
