Riley stole the spotlight at The Compound Fall League on Sunday. She might be an 8th grader, but Riley didn’t show any signs of timidity competing against varsity players. Riley earned the label of “sharpshooter” in my notes. She drilled a high-arcing three, dribbled into a triple from the slot, and buried a straightaway three. Riley has excellent balance and mechanics on her shot; she’s not a player you want to leave open. Beyond shooting, Riley made an impact on the defensive end and as a facilitator. She swiped the ball away and dished out an assist, moved her feet, and worked hard to apply pressure on the perimeter. She was very active at the top of the half-court defense. Riley fired a long pass ahead in transition for an assist, made great lob entry passes with touch to rollers, grabbed offensive rebounds, and scored a putback. One of her highlights came when Riley sprinted ahead during a fast break, made a great adjustment to corral the deflected pass, and immediately drove straight to the basket to score a layup off two feet. She has a bright future ahead and will be a welcome addition to the Fraser basketball program.
