Sophomore Bianca Pendleton provided the muscle down low as they looked to see how they’d match up against WCAC opposition. Bishop Ireton was full strength led by seniors Akuna Konkwo (Boston College) and Symantha Shackelford. Seeing the Cardinals a few times already this fall we had an idea what they had but, this was the first actual real game feel we had.
Sydney Peters
The game was all Ireton even with the score resetting each quarter. Shackleford’s three point shooting was a big difference as she knocked down almost every shot she took from beyond the arc. Sydney Peters did well controlling the games pace. As Ireton started the game on a 9-0 run. The Bullis lone field goal option in the quarter came from off the bench with 2:30 remaining as sophomore Krislin Arjukese knocked down a three and a midrange jumper. Sophomore combo Laila Jewett had some nice mid-range buckets throughout the game and Konkwo got stronger as the game went on.
Although, the Cardinals were too strong for the Bulldogs on Saturday, there were some positives that they could take from this game. First off, they were able to repeatedly get to the line. Next coach Amy Heinzmann has a lot of young talent in Arjukese along with Kayla Beckwith, Victoria Eniafe and Calla O’Neil to build a solid program. Finally, Bullis is not in the WCAC and won’t have to face that level of competition on a nightly bases. The ISL Conference will offer some competition with the marquee game being against Sidwell Friends. One of the two should emerge with a championship if they can both remain healthy.
