The annual battle alternates home gyms as Howard county schools hosted last season. There were several intriguing match ups on the schedule, but I decided to check out Oakland Mills at Severna Park due to the buzz around the Oakland Mills program this season.
I have to admit I came away impressed by the Scorpions as they posted a rather impressive 58-38 win over a solid Severna Park team. The Scorpions were led by junior point guard Jazmine Washington who scored 18 points and played stellar defense. She also shot the ball particularly well from beyond the arc. Severna Park never really threatened the Scorpions, who controlled the game most of the way. Oakland Mills is fresh off a final four run in the 2A division last season, and this was their fourth victory in a week. Coach Walt Hagins has added his daughter Domonique Hagins to the staff and it seems to be paying early dividends. The former South River standout point guard has been a great mentor so far, especially for the team’s guards. This team looks potentially better than last year’s squad, and could make another serious run behind some strong senior contributors who can play at the next level. My only concern with this team is that they are only suiting up 8 players. Here is a look at their senior contributors…
Kiyah King
Kiyah transferred in from Wilde Lake for her senior season and she is providing some toughness and scoring. She is a solidly built guard at 5’9″ that provides floor spacing with her shot and she is a willing rebounder. She is currently unsigned.
Aislynn Riggs
Aislynn is a shot blocking machine. She posted 9 blocks last night and I have seen her post these type of numbers before. She has outstanding timing and instincts and often tips just enough of the ball to keep it in play for herself or a teammate. She also has a tendency to emphatically block some shots out into the parking lot. I guess it depends on her mood. She has also added other elements to her game as she is shooting 3 pointers and taking defenders off the dribble, nice skills to have in the bag for a six footer. She ended up with 11 points and 12 rebounds to go with those 9 blocks. She is still weighing her college options.
Kobie Scott- Pearson
Kobie transferred in from Western for her senior year and I like the fit. She’s a smooth lefty with good length for a wing at 5’11”. She runs the floor and finishes well in the paint. She is also a perimeter threat and a good defender. This is a nice addition for the Scorpions and she should benefit from the heavy minutes. She is still unsigned.
Marley Grenway
Marley is a 5’10” two guard that can run some point if needed. She is one of the best long ball shooters in the area and has signed with Coppin State. She scored 11 points last night which put her into the 1,000 career points club. With the personal achievement behind her she is eager get make another run at a 2A state championship.
