SubscribeThings are heating up on the Baltimore side of the DMV. Two major events, She Got Game and Title IX, have answered a lot of questions over the past few weeks. Teams are starting to separate themselves, but we still have plenty of questions to be answered. High school coaches and supporters from the 495 side of the DMV are starting to send those messages inquiring about who they should scout in their particular class for potential play off clashes. Let’s get into it.
1. St. Frances
Still undefeated in league play. They are playing a tough out of conference schedule and winning for the most part. Angel Reese cracked 1,000 career points. Aniya Gourdine is looking like a legit prospect in her second season.
2. Roland Park
They beat a good National Christian team before falling to Bishop McNamara at Title IX. Ja’niah Henson and Mir Mclean have recently reached 1,000 career points. Their big test will come against St. Frances. Nothing else matters if they can not knock the champs off.
3. Poly
They scored a tough win over a solid Mt. De Sales. team. They are 7-1 and looking like a lock to appear in the Baltimore city championship. Could we see another 3A battle with Frederick down the line?
4. McDonogh
The Eagles are rolling along at 9-1. They have some tough games coming up this week with St. Frances and Rock Creek Christian looming.
5. Frederick
At 8-2 the Cadets are looking like a threat in 3A again. Coach Ashley Bush has them locked in and they are going to go where super senior Makayla Daniels takes them.
6. Pikesville
The Panthers are 6-2 with a tough win over North Point at Title IX, followed by a loss to TC Williams. They are still one of the favorites to emerge as a 1A contender.
7. Pallotti
These Panthers are 7-3. They just took an L from St. Frances but they were competitive most of the game. The culture has changed in Laurel.
8. Mt. De Sales.
They beat a banged up Western team at the BBOWS tournament and lost to Poly in a slugfest. 9-1 looks good on them. Will they finally taste that elusive IAAM B conference title?
9. Oakland Mills
The Scorpions are 10-0 with a big showdown with Howard this week. They create match up problems with their versatile players.
10. Howard
They bring an 8-1 record into the week with games against Oakland Mills and St. John’s Catholic on tap. Coach Scott Robinson reached the 400 win milestone recently, but he wants that 4A championship.
11. Western
They had some health issues over the holiday break. Took a loss to Mt. De Sales but bounced back and handled Mt. Hebron. They are 6-2.
12. Mt. Carmel
This team plays hard every game. They are 9-3 with 2 losses to St. James and 1 to St. John’s Catholic. Do not hand that B conference championship over to Mt. De Sales just yet. They have a big showdown with Old Mill at the Public vs. Private Challenge that will answer some questions.
13. Old Mill
The Patriots are 7-1 and looking like a tough out in 4A. They are relatively deep and are using bench contributions to put teams away. A battle for Anne Arundel county bragging rights is coming up with South River.
14. South River
The Seahawks are 7-1 with the loss coming to number 10 Howard. The Old Mill game is must see action.
15. St. John’s Catholic
They picked up a good win over Neshaminy at the Diamond State Classic. Sitting at 6-4. They need a signature win in the A conference to stay in the mix.
16. Reservoir
This is another solid Howard county team at 7-2. I’m looking forward to seeing them at the Public vs. Private Challenge against St. Mary’s Ryken of the WCAC. Will they be a threat in 3A?
17. Coppin Academy
The Eagles are sporting a gaudy 11-3 record. Kayla Henderson and Nyshae Weaver give them a chance in every game. They are anxious to return to the 1A final four after coming up short last March.
18. Chesapeake
Chesapeake’s Big 3 of Kayla Cabbagestalk, Trinity Horton and Tamara Stanford are putting up ridiculous numbers. They are currently at 5-2 and in the Baltimore county mix. They have a big match up against Pallotti this weekend.
19. Spalding
The Cavaliers have been playing well lately and have a 7-5 record. Wins over St. John’s Catholic and Old Mill give us no choice but to bring them into the mix. They have a big match up with Oxon Hill this weekend.
20. City
At 6-2 City College is on the heels of Poly, Western and Coppin Academy in Baltimore city. They have a tough match up with St. Timothy’s at the Public vs. Private Challenge this weekend.
